About Our Job
The Department of Public Safety is seeking a highly motivated and creative individual to serve as its Community Affairs Manager.
Inclusive community engagement is critical to the work of the Department of Public Safety. Every voice matters and we are committed to shaping the future of public safety through meaningful, thoughtful engagement and conversation. The Community Affairs Manager will be strongly focused on engaging with Denver’s diverse communities, s/he will also be heavily invested in bridge building within the City and County of Denver government agencies. This position will spearhead engagement efforts with a focus on diversity, inclusion, and the advancement of public safety transformation that is responsive to community expectations and needs. The position will also be able to creatively foster outreach by implementing strategies that meaningfully engage community members, partners and internal and external stakeholders.
Key responsibilities:
  • Lead and organize the Department of Public Safety’s community outreach and engagement efforts, identifying key areas of need and opportunity that align with executive priorities.
  • Develop a strategic network of community partnerships, including business organizations, non-profits, faith-based organizations, registered neighborhood organizations, Boards and Commissions and business improvement districts, to build shared understanding and support, communication flow, and relationship development.
  • Establish and maintain strong partnerships and meaningful relationships with personnel throughout the Department of Public Safety and with criminal justice system stakeholders.
  • Develop, organize and facilitate or co-facilitate community meetings, listening sessions, workshops, and special events with internal and external stakeholders in a respectful and diplomatic manner representative of the Executive Director’s Office.
  • Provide advice to the Executive Director, his executive team and members of Safety leadership on matters of strategic partnerships and community engagement.
  • Represent the department at community meetings, public events, and on committees and task forces as assigned.
  • Partner with staff in other city departments, including the Mayor’s and City Council offices, on citywide initiatives and emergent priorities.
  • As needed, implement new and creative community engagement tools tailored to different audiences and by different types of projects.
About You
Our ideal candidate has:
  • At least 3-5 years of experience working in government, outreach, community engagement, or community organizing.
  • The ability to think on her/his feet while maintaining diplomacy.
  • Proven experience in successfully navigating a complex matrixed environment.
  • Bilingual or multilingual, including a proficiency speaking, reading and writing in Spanish
  • Demonstrated experience working with at least one of these groups: youth, immigrant/refugee populations, predominantly Spanish speakers, people of color, or another historically marginalized population.
  • Passion for building community and a strong commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion.
  • Familiarity with issues related to gentrification and displacement and an understanding of how these issues have specifically impacted Denver neighborhoods
  • Excellent verbal communication skills.
  • Highly organized, self-motivated and motivated to help others.

  • Education requirement: Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration or a related field based on a specific position(s).
  • Experience Requirement: Five (5) years’ experience performing full performance professional level duties within a specialized, functional area. (This does not include clerical experience.)
  • Education/Experience Equivalency: One (1) year of the appropriate type and level of experience may be substituted for each required year of post-high school education. Additional appropriate education may be substituted for the minimum experience requirements.
