Cook County Public Health and Human Services has a vacancy for a full time (40 hours per week) Community Support Technician - Mental Health Worker.

Cook County Job Summary:
Under general direction, performs work in providing therapeutic skills and community support services for adults and children experiencing complex social and health situations, providing rehabilitative services to adults and children with mental illness, in the form of instruction, support, and assistance for the purpose of promoting psychiatric stability, social competencies, personal and emotional adjustment, and independent living skills. The practitioner will provide services that are rehabilitative and enable the client to develop and enhance psychiatric stability, personal and emotional adjustment, social competencies, community skills, and independent living skills. The practitioner works with adults providing Adult Rehabilitative Mental Health Services (ARMHS) and children providing Children’s Therapeutic Support Services (CTSS).

Examples of Duties
  • Develops and administers assessment tools, curriculum and resource materials to be used with clients in areas of food preparation, use of transportation, personal care, shopping, housekeeping, money management and the use of community resources.
  • Trains clients or arranges for training of clients in food preparation, use of transportation, personal care, shopping, housekeeping, money management and use of community resources.
  • Motivates and encourages clients to follow through with independent living skills, training and helps them incorporate this training into their lifestyle.
  • Assists clients in obtaining and maintaining living arrangements that are least restrictive and most appropriate, including teaching specific skills to clients including types of living arrangements and how to obtain suitable living arrangements.
  • Assist clients in all phases of independent living, including location of housing, and provides needed support to keep housing.
  • Teaches clients specific skills to maintain living arrangements in small groups and individually.
  • Documents significant information in case files and prepares written reports for social workers.
Minimum Qualifications

Merit System Minimum Qualifications
Completion of two years of coursework in social work, psychology, sociology or closely related behavioral science area or two years related experience working with families or individuals teaching home management, and other independent living skill areas.

Cook County Qualifications
Completion of two years of coursework in social work, psychology, sociology or closely related behavioral science area AND two years of experience working with families or individuals teaching home management and other independent living skill area or an equivalent combination of education and skills.

Cook County Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge of community resources.
Bachelor’s degree in Human Services or related field.
2,000 supervised hours in the delivery of services to adults or children with mental illness.
Valid driver's license


Examination Process


The examination process will consist entirely of a Rating of Education and Experience.
