About the YOLA Program

YOLA is Music and Artistic Director Gustavo Dudamel’s signature program. YOLA was inspired by El Sistema, the music education system, which provides young people with free musical instruments and intensive musical instruction In Venezuela. Central to YOLA’s mission is the promotion of healthy growth and development through the study, practice and performance of music. Simultaneously, YOLA positively invests in each child’s development as a musical ambassador of peace, hope, and understanding amongst a diverse population of cultures, backgrounds and beliefs. YOLA currently serves more than 1,300 elementary, middle, and high school students throughout Los Angeles and is soon opening its fifth site in Inglewood.

About the Beckmen YOLA Center:

The 25,000-square-foot Judith and Thomas L. Beckmen YOLA Center will serve as the home of YOLA's fifth site in Inglewood as well as providing a gathering place for students from existing and future YOLA sites. In addition to its youth programming, Beckmen YOLA Center will also be a space for music educators from across the U.S. and around the world to collaborate and learn. It will be a cultural resource for the people of Inglewood, and act as the focal point of the LA Phil's commitment to community engagement in the area. The project, which has emerged out of a close collaboration between of the City of Inglewood, architect Frank Gehry, and LA Phil Music & Artistic Director Gustavo Dudamel, is made possible by a leadership gift from Judith and Thomas L. Beckmen.

Position Summary:

The YOLA at Inglewood Coordinator, under the supervision of the YOLA at Inglewood Program Manager, provides support and coordination for all YOLA at Inglewood programming and events, aiding in the overall administration of YOLA at Inglewood. The coordinator is expected to have strong leadership, professional and administrative skills, and to be comfortable communicating with a wide range of constituencies including parents, students, and partner organizations. Hours for this position will range between 25 - 29 hours per week.


Scope of Work:

Program Logistics:

  • Coordinate daily operations, including schedule changes, ensemble rehearsals, student sign in/sign out, and set up and break down
  • Support teachers, students, and parents during programming
  • Coordinate student enrollment and attendance
  • Coordinate large instrument/classroom inventory
  • Assist with program logistics, evaluation and assessment
  • Coordinate repertoire for multiple ensembles
  • Coordinate daily communication with parents, students, and Teaching Artists
  • Independently run daily operations of program for Teaching Artists and Students
  • Other projects and duties as assigned, which could include but are not limited to supporting YOLA cross-site initiatives and related communications

Organizing and Planning:

  • Assisting with recruitment of new students
  • Organizing and planning events, concerts, and field trips
  • Support and co-lead program planning for YOLA at Inglewood
  • Ensure the high quality of program delivery by reviewing, examining and adjusting program logistics

Position Expectations:

  • The YOLA at Inglewood Coordinator (YIC) is an important member of the Learning team and is central to the operations of the Beckmen YOLA Center (BYC)
  • The YIC is expected to be an active and participatory member of the Learning team and engage with all major events for the department
  • The YIC will have excellent communication skills, with attention to detail, a strong sense of empathy and a proactive, curious nature
  • The YIC will continuously look for ways to improve the operations of logistics for YOLA at Inglewood and improve the experiences of important stakeholders, partners, families and students
Minimum Requirements

Position Requirements

  • A love for and knowledge of music (orchestral and/or choral)
  • Previous administrative and self-governed project management experience
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and a solutions-oriented approach to challenges
  • Spanish language proficiency (written and verbal)
  • Ability to prioritize workload; Efficient and effective worker
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment in a self-directed way
  • Fluency in all Microsoft suites components and remote working tools (Slack, Google, Zoom, etc.)
  • Strong organization skills; detail oriented
  • Ability to work weekends and evening
  • Strong interpersonal skills with a desire to work on a highly collaborated, intrinsically motivated team
  • Ability to work effectively and respectfully with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Interest and ability to be a motivational mentor and role model for students
