Purpose of Job

The purpose of this position is to provide daily care and supervision of juveniles held at the Juvenile Service Center.

Essential Functions

  • Ensure care and supervision of juveniles while held at the Juvenile Service Center by maintaining the security, welfare, and order of juveniles
  • Engage in crisis intervention and emergency response; quell fights and other violent outbursts; appropriately restrain juveniles as necessary and in accordance with all appropriate rules and guidelines
  • Ensure juveniles adhere to Juvenile Service Center rules and guidelines
  • Supervise recreational activities and assist with serving meals
  • Serve as role model for juveniles; encourage and assist juveniles in the practice of proper hygiene
  • Complete all required reports and documentation such as Department of Children's Services (DCS)reports; daily shift reports; log book entries; and incident reports
  • Adhere to all laws (such as the Prison Rape Elimination Act), rules, and Center policies and procedures
  • Center policies and procedures
  • Follow rules, regulations, and guidelines asset forth in the Centers manual and as directed by the Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent
  • Brief staff at shift changes, as necessary
  • Respond to subpoenas and court orders
  • Interact appropriately with the general public
  • Work cooperatively as part of a team
  • Communicate, in writing, articulately and legibly
  • Ensure regular, punctual attendance during scheduled work hours
  • Respond to and report immediately if called upon by local regional or central office supervisors as part of a coordinated emergency response by the Knox County Health Department
  • Perform other duties as required

Minimum Training and Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • One year of experience working in a children's services facility (volunteer experience and practicum or intern experience may be considered)
  • Successful completion of 40 hours of pre-service training and annual40- hour training
  • Ability to use a defibrillator and to administer first aid
  • Ability to appropriately use restraint and to break up altercations
  • Must be 21 years or older
  • Must possess and maintain valid Tennessee driver's license

  • Ability to solve somewhat difficult problems
  • Ability to use two-way radios to communicate with other Center staff
  • Ability to appropriately provide direction to juveniles at the Center

Physical Requirements

This position requires occasional moderate effort or frequent periods of light physical activity

Occupational Hazards

  • Potential exposure to injury when breaking up altercations or restraining a violent juvenile
  • Potential exposure to communicable diseases
