The Logistical Support and Distribution Specialist position will serve in the Corrections Education Program. This position is responsible for the operations conducted in the CEP storage area. This person will coordinate when materials will be delivered, loaded, and transported to our 7 correctional facilities. Inventory of all materials will be conducted before all deliveries and upon the receival of the materials when they are returned from the prison. Student support materials such as paper, pens, folders, calculators, and computers will be inventoried each term, repurposed and then packaged for delivery for the upcoming term. Additional functions of this position include new student orientation packet creation, homework assignment pickup and delivery. Additional duties as assigned.

Essential Functions

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

  • Keeps an accurate inventory of all materials coming and going out of the CEP storage area.
  • Monitor and maintain accurate counts of student supplies to ensure all students are adequately equipped each term.
  • Coordinate with the Director of the Corrections Education Program on when and where deliveries, collections, and pickups of materials is going to be conducted.
  • Provides support for the Corrections Education team with material collection, new student packet building, report card distribution, and other auxiliary items needed for delivery in the correctional facilities.
  • Ensures Corrections Education Director is apprised of all pertinent information that may affect the department in regard to book and supply needs.
  • Performs monthly audit reviews to ensure accuracy of book and supply inventory.
  • Maintains virtual file of records and communication with student.
  • Ensures that the supply delivery is timely and accurate per each facility need.
  • Promotes and supports the Corrections Education Program.
  • Works collaboratively with all offices comprised within Student Services and Academics.
  • Acts in accordance with Jackson College’s values, mission and beliefs.
  • Responsible for understanding, supporting and actively demonstrating the College’s beliefs, values, mission and vision and being in agreement to be evaluated by same.

CONTACTS AND PURPOSE OF CONTACTS

Internal: Frequent contact with registration/records, advising, admissions, financial aid, business office, office of diversity, student life, and information technology staff in information sharing/gathering and problem-solving capacity.

External: Frequent contact with MDOC facility staff.

Education and/or Experience
Minimum qualifications:
  • Associates Degree degree (A.A.) from two-year college or university and two years related experience and/or training in higher education.
  • Experience with Michigan Department of Corrections.

Preferred qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree from four-year college or university.
Other Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to organize large quantities of book titles, computers, and other student materials.
  • Ability to deal effectively with MDOC partners, and internal JC colleagues.
  • Knowledge of the partnership between Jackson College and Michigan Department of Corrections.
  • Knowledge of office software including word processing, spreadsheets and database.

Language Skills
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively with groups of customers or employees of organizations.

Reasoning Ability
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, and diagram or schedule form.
