SUMMARY OF POSITION
The police crime analyst applies knowledge of Texas laws, police procedures and criminal behavior to perform statistical and analytical research through the use of computer applications to collect, collate, analyze and disseminate information for crime pattern detection, suspect-crime correlation, target-suspect profiles, crime forecasting, and related police intelligence research work. Assists the Accreditation and Reporting Supervisor as needed to ensure compliance with statements of policy directives, operating procedure, and accreditation standards.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Collects, objectively analyzes and interprets statistical data regarding crime patterns and trends and department operations. Composes preliminary reports. Plans, conducts, and prepares special projects as requested by supervisor.
  • Responds to internal and external information requests from police operational and administrative personnel, citizens, news media and other law enforcement agencies.
  • Coordinates the exchange of criminal intelligence information within departmental entities and with other agencies.
  • Initiates research and locates information sources.
  • Creates, reviews and publishes crime bulletins, charts, graphs and maps illustrating crime patterns and statistics.
  • Identifies repeat offenders.
  • Identifies and reports spatial and temporal trends and patterns of criminal activity that directly affect manpower deployment.
  • Provides line-level officers and supervisory personnel with objective analyses to assist in problem solving, scheduling and directed patrol.
  • Determines and applies appropriate methods for accessing, downloading and analyzing data from existing Police Records information.
  • Develops and instructs training programs regarding the development and application of crime analysis information for police personnel and the general public.
  • Assists in the investigative process to increase apprehension and clearance of cases.
  • Supports law enforcement statistical studies for city council, director of public safety, police staff and other city departments.
  • Conducts computer searches for suspects using vehicle information, phone numbers, suspect acquaintances, and addresses; formulates research methods for accurate reporting; researches and resolves data discrepancies to ensure data integrity.
  • Assists in the preparation of annual reports and evaluations from statistical data gathered throughout the department to include Standard Service Index, Racial Profiling and Professional Services, and annual reporting.
  • Assists with maintaining department accreditation, including participation in on-site accreditation visits, compliance inspections, conferences, and training as needed.

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Performs Community Policing Services in the Community.
  • Drives to and from meetings or training as necessary.

  • Skill to operate computer hardware, such as personal computer, mainframes, scanners, modems, printers and plotters. Ability to use assorted software, such as Windows, DOS, databases, spreadsheets, word processing, communications, and GIS.
  • Skill to plan, organize and write documentation for computer software applications.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, and the ability to apply analytical reasoning.

Required Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Associate degree in related field.
  • Two (2) years performing crime analysis or other professional experience in related programs.

Any work related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above Minimum Qualifications is an acceptable substitute for the above specified education and experience requirements.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
  • Must pass a drug screen and background check.
  • Must have Class C Texas Driver’s License

SELECTION PROCESS

Expected Duration-
