The Municipal Building Commission (MBC) is seeking to fill multiple Custodian vacancies including day and night shifts to perform routine janitorial duties at Minneapolis City Hall and Hennepin County Courthouse.

Salary reflects 2022 rates. Position are represented by a collective bargaining agreement between the MBC and AFSCME, Minnesota Council No. 5 Local Union 9, AFL-CIO.

The Municipal Building Commission (MBC) has served as the steward for the historic Minneapolis City Hall and Hennepin County Courthouse (also referred to as the Municipal Building) since 1904. The MBC's mission is to provide effective and efficient services to operate, maintain and preserve the historic landmark City Hall and Courthouse building, and ensure a safe and functional environment for government employees, citizens and elected officials. The MBC is funded jointly by the City of Minneapolis and Hennepin County and manages the care and control of the Minneapolis City Hall/Courthouse. Over one thousand employees and members of the public enter the building daily.

Location and hours:
These positions are full time, non-exempt and located at the Minneapolis City Hall/Hennepin County Courthouse in downtown Minneapolis. Hours for these positions are day and night shifts.

In these positions you will:
  • Be responsible for performing general custodial duties including:
    • Empty trash, recycle and organic waste containers from assigned areas.
    • Clean and disinfect toilets, urinals, sinks, showers, drinking fountains in assigned areas.
    • Sweep, mop, vacuum offices, conference rooms, hallways, stairs, and elevators in assigned areas.
    • Clean carpets, scrub, wax, and buff floors in assigned areas.
    • Clean glass, doors, and walls as well dust all surfaces in assigned areas.
    • Shovel snow from entries.
    • Restock paper goods in kitchens and bathrooms
    • Use assigned departmental equipment such as, vacuums, floor buffers, carpet extractors, kia vac machine.
    • Perform other duties as assigned or delegated.
Need to have:
  • 1 year job experience performing some or all the duties listed above.
  • Strong knowledge of environmental cleaning practices.
  • Ability to perform all physical, mental, and environmental job functions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with public/building occupants; be customer service oriented.
  • Ability to understand spoken English and communicate effectively with public/building occupants.
  • Successful completion and maintenance of Hennepin County Adult Detention Center/Public safety Facility background.
  • Successful completion and maintenance of Minneapolis Police Department background.
Nice to have:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • 2 years of related custodial experience.
Ability to meet physical requirements:
  • Prolonged periods standing.
  • Must be able to stand, walk, bend, stoop, twist, push, pull, reach, kneel, crawl, squat, climb, and lift up to 40 pounds on occasions.
