Summary of Overall Job:

Create data-driven stories for Government Technology and its related editorial products as directed by editors. The writer is responsible for developing and maintaining a network of data sources; smart, high-value editorial content for the Web and print; pitching and developing story ideas for Web and magazine coverage; and writing stories that demonstrate thoughtful analysis of their subjects. The writer is also responsible for working with data and creating compelling and useful visualizations to accompany their own writing as well as other writers’ stories.

Essential Duties:

• Report and write Web stories, including news briefs and by-lined articles in coordination with editors
• Report and write magazine features in coordination with editors
• Exercise sound news judgment
• Conceive and develop story ideas for the magazine and Web
• Continually locate, sort and analyze publicly available data that is best suited to telling stories through numbers
• Research, organize, interpret and visualize data to make it approachable, usable and feature rich
• Regularly prepare, produce and post data sets and data visualizations
• Collaborate with writers and editors to bring relevant data to stories and features

Skills/Qualifications:

• Ability to produce clear, concise and accurately written articles
• Strong analytical skills
• Knowledge of state and local government and technology
• Able to conduct phone and in-person interviews of government and industry sources
• Able to convey complex issues clearly and accurately
• Able to work under strict deadlines
• Knowledge of AP style
• Able to post through content management system and commercial social networks
• Training and/or aptitude in computer-assisted or data journalism and its related disciplines
• Able to source, sort, curate and visualize data in a fast-paced environment, including use of spreadsheet software and visualization tools
• Ability to understand and articulate both the significance and limitations of data
• Write headlines, captions and abstracts to accompany data, tailored for both human readers and search engine optimization
• Manage projects, maintain data sets, control versions and data integrity
• Able to work both collaboratively and independently as needed
• Must be in a work environment with reliable Internet access
