POSITION SUMMARY:
The Dean of Professional Performance functions as part of the Academic Affairs Senior Leadership. The Dean will help support the mission of the college in creating a rich and multidimensional student experience that gives artists and music professionals the skills and competencies they need in music and in life. A passion for music, particularly contemporary music, and commitment to the experience of music students are essential. In addition, the Dean actively strives to foster and maintain a workplace and learning climate that is supportive of all employees and students regardless of their identity, that is respectful of difference and is genuinely open to various and differing perspectives.
Reporting to the Vice President/Executive Director of the college, the Dean is responsible for the administration of the Professional Performance Division which includes the following departments: Bass, Percussion, Brass, Piano, Ear Training, String, Ensemble, Voice, Guitar, Woodwind. Additionally, the Dean oversees the following Institutes: American Roots Music, Berklee Global Jazz, Effortless Mastery, Micro-tonal Music, and the Institute of Jazz and Gender Justice.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Dean will be a forward thinking, accomplished professional who will lead the division in areas of curriculum design and development, faculty and staff hiring, uses of technology, scholarship, and pedagogy and instruction. S/he will be an individual who embraces diversity in individuals, perspectives, musical styles, and curriculum. The Dean must have the leadership, managerial and organizational skills to navigate in a complex academic setting, and to build relationships with partners inside the college, as well as locally, nationally, and internationally.
The Dean is responsible for:
  • The development of short and longrange goals for the division
  • The supervision and evaluation of Chairs, Assistant Chairs, Institute Directors, and division staff

  • Oversight and preparation of the division budget
  • Curriculum development
  • Oversight of faculty and staff hiring
  • General oversight of the Performance Major and Performance Core
  • Leading institutional and inter-divisional collaborations
MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
BM/BA in music or equivalent and 3-5 years of experience in position(s) of academic leadership.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:
Advanced knowledge of performance pedagogy, professional standards of live performance presentation, up to date understanding of current music industry trends and the skills necessary to succeed in the industry
SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
Outstanding communication, interpersonal, and consensus building skills, and demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and collegially with a wide variety of constituents, strong financial acumen with a thorough understanding of complex budget planning and management
