Position Overview:

SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory seeks a Detector Scientist Level 3 within the Sensor Department of the Instrumentation Division of the Technology Innovation Directorate. The person filling this position will be expected to support a broad array of science projects possibly including direct dark matter searches, cosmic microwave background cosmology (CMB-S4), double-beta decay (nEXO), and the LCLS detector program. In addition, they will work on the development of novel technologies to enable the next generation of science measurements. The ideal candidate will have knowledge and an interest in a broad range of science.

Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Elucidation of physics and chemical processes underlying observed device behavior
  • Characterize the performance of prototype, radiation detector systems
  • Work with radioactive sources
  • Assembly of x-ray detectors and other systems
  • Data analysis to quantify and understand measurements
  • Material and thin film analysis
  • Simulation and modeling
  • Work on a team to design and develop next generation radiation sensors and systems

To be successful in this position you will bring:

  • Ph.D. in physics, applied physics, engineering, chemistry, or related fields with at least 4 years of relevant experience in the following:
    • Designing and constructing radiopure systems
    • Working with semiconductors such as silicon and Germanium
    • Superconducting materials and cryogenic systems
    • Medical or space-based applications
  • Expertise in scientific instrumentation
  • A passion for science
  • Strong background in programming in a high-level language such as Python or similar
  • Effective communication and writing skills to prepare and present technical and scientific documentation
  • Demonstrated record of scientific productivity through publications
  • Demonstrated ability to work and communicate effectively with a diverse population.
  • Demonstrated ability to carry out independent research and be able to collaborate in a team environment.

The expected pay range for this position is $131,000 to $204,000 per annum. SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory/Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
