Friends of the Children - New York (Friends NY) is looking for a passionate, committed, professional to join our family. Friends NY is a chapter of a nationwide organization dedicated to breaking the cycle of generational poverty through professional mentoring. We select children facing multiple systemic obstacles from Harlem and the South Bronx and commit to working with those children from kindergarten to graduation - 12+ years, no matter what.

Basic Function / Position Objective:

Reporting directly to the Executive Director, the DFO is responsible for developing and executing the operational strategy for the chapter in support of the Executive Director’s vision. This position will be responsible for developing scaling processes, leading a team, and overseeing Finance, Facilities, HR and IT operations. She or he will instill a team performance culture among a group of diverse, talented individuals. This position will rotate between our Harlem and Bronx office, remote work is not an option.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Provide ED with accurate and timely analysis of the financial performance of the organization.
  • Model multi-year forward financial forecasts.
  • Actively contribute and participate in organizational-wide activities to advance the overall success of our chapter and delivery of our mission.
  • Be an active participant and contributor to developing and maintaining a healthy organizational culture with a focus on organizational core values.
  • Oversee, evaluate, and adjust as needed, current Finance, HR, IT, facilities, and other administrative systems to integrate operating infrastructure with programmatic efforts.
  • Work closely with our finance consultants and Board finance committee to manage the budget and ensure the highest level of financial control of the organization including but not limited to managing and approving daily financial transactions, providing accurate and comprehensive monitoring and reporting on budgets and financial forecast, and successful completion of the annual audit and tax filing.
  • Work with development team to create grant application budgets and ensure grant financial reporting compliance.
  • Lead performance planning process that links team and individual goals to annual plan and budget.
  • Take the lead on organizational compliance monitoring to ensure we meet and exceed all legal, safety, public health, and all other governmental compliance and regulations in our daily operations, including leading organizational natural and manmade crisis response efforts.
  • Support bookkeeper and National finance team in the oversight of finance tasks.
  • Procure, manage, and evaluate all external vendors who provide services critical to our mission.
  • Provide vendor management and procurement services to ensure we are getting the right price and right service.
  • Manage and coordinate the development, utilization, and operation of physical facilities in New York and ensure a safe operating environment for staff.
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Education, Experience, and Abilities:

  • Bachelors degree or equivalent work experience
  • Exceptional financial acumen, understanding of non-profit accounting, and natural business instincts.
  • Strong technical and data-driven orientation.
  • Ability to think strategically and align processes and operations to organizational goals.
  • Experienced, multi-culturally competent general manager.
  • Proven ability to track, prioritize, and drive multiple concurrent projects to success using strong project management skills and prioritization.
  • Ability to stay composed, diplomatic, and thoughtful in a complex environment.
  • Thoughtful and mature leader and collaborator; high emotional intelligence.
  • Skilled communicator.
