Job Summary:
Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is currently searching for a Director of Learning & Development (DL&D) to join the Human Resouces Department. This position reports into the Chief People Office and is responsible for leading the creation and execution of the Institution’s learning strategy to include leadership and community member development, performance management, and succession planning in alignment and support of Vision 2030.
This is a regular, full-time,exempt position, and is eligible for benefits.
Essential Functions:
Learning Management
  • Implements programs that support the Institution’s Talent Development vision, strategy, roadmap, and measurements, focusing on strengthening leadership capability/readiness, accelerating development at various organizational levels, and embedding foundational leadership programs organization-wide.
  • Partners with key stakeholders to identify measures of success for learning & development solutions and evaluate the short- and long-term effectiveness of these. Uses participant data, management observation, and productivity/quality performance data to link learning with organizational impact.
  • Identifies learning needs through the use of effective needs analyses and input from the appropriate stakeholders within the organization to determine technical, professional, managerial, and leadership learning gaps.
  • Designs, develops, delivers, and evaluates learning programs and other structured development solutions (e.g. experiential / action learning, labs, etc.) aligned with organizational strategies in order to enhance community member capabilities and achieve organizational objectives. Assures the use of appropriate instructional design methods, adult learning theory, and media.
  • Proactively researches and identifies opportunities to apply new thinking on Leadership Development to improve leader effectiveness. Stays abreast of learning field trends and best practices.
  • Integrates and embeds Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion throughout the design, management, and implementation by partnering with Chief DE&I Officer.
  • Conducts on-site and virtual facilitation and/or delivery of training programs as an instructor and oversees the delivery of programs by other facilitators.
  • Responsible for curating, developing, and organizing content in ways that are engaging and consumable by our community members (eLearning, podcasts, videos, job aids, etc).
  • Establishes leadership effectiveness internal benchmarks, leveraging external data sources to qualify and quantify organizational impact.
  • Manages and optimizes the enterprise learning management system (LMS)
  • Selects and manages vendor partners as needed to support the development/delivery of learning & development solutions.
  • Provides thoughtful leadership on best practices in learning and development in alignment with broader talent management strategies.
Performance and Succession Management
  • Partners with stakeholders to develop and implement the organization’s behavioral competency model in alignment with the Institution’s Values.
  • Collaboratively develops and administers the organization’s performance management programs in a manner that adds value to the community as a whole.
  • Serves as an internal consultant to support the delivery of constructive coaching and mentoring with employees.
  • Implements a succession planning strategy to ensure long-term sustainability of talent for the Institution.
  • Assesses, develops, and implements leadership development programs aligned to the organizational succession strategy.
  • Leads organizational development programs such as the Talent Review/Succession program, High Potential development programs in order to deliver best-in-class results.
Education & Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Organizational Development, I/O Psychology, Business or other related field.
  • 8-10 years; or equivalent mix of education and experience
  • Certifications in Gallup’s Strengths, MBTI, Korn Ferry’s Leadership Architect, Human Synergistics Suite of Culture Assessments, Situational Leadership II and other research-based tools/assessments (ability to become certified within the first 6 months if not currently certified)
  • Strong relationship management, influence, and collaboration skills
  • Multi-tasking skills – able to manage current and emerging issues in a fast-paced and changing environment
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and ability to communicate effectively at all levels, internal and external, proven team player
  • Ability to work independently under minimal guidance
