Brandeis University is delighted to announce a career opportunity as a Director of University Events (UE). This position is responsible for the overall vision, strategy, and oversight of Brandeis’ events management operation. As the leader of a ten-person, service-oriented department, the UE Director ensures a high level and consistent image of the university in the wide variety of public and private events. There are three types of events that take place primarily on the Brandeis campus but also off campus: internal – event sponsor and participants are members of the Brandeis community (e.g., Commencement, anniversary celebrations, dedications, fundraising, receptions and dinners); sponsored – event sponsor is a member of the Brandeis community but the participants are not (e.g., academic conferences); and external – event sponsor and participants are not members of the Brandeis community (summer programs, conferences).
Reporting to the Vice President for Campus Planning Operations, the ideal candidate has experience in higher education, is an innovative and enthusiastic leader who will foster strong and collaborative working relationships with staff and colleagues across the university toward the shared goal of excellence in university events.
Brandeis is an R1 university located in Waltham, MA, next to the Brandeis/Roberts MBTA commuter rail station on a 250-acre residential campus with 2.8 million gross square feet of space in 100 buildings.

Essential Functions:
  • Leadership. 30 % of time. Creates a vision for UE by defining, socializing, and implementing short- and long-term goals and objectives that align with the strategy and needs of the university. Leads departmental and university-wide changes in approaches to university events that reflect best practices in higher education and the industry. Develops and sustains policies, procedures, and service level agreements that support the implementation of the vision for UE, including, for example, strategies for effective and efficiency in event planning, to achieve service-oriented objectives, and to support the university’s policies related to sustainability. With support from the Executive Director for Operations, Administration, and Budget, strategizes the management of resources – staff, budget, and technology.
  • Collaboration. 25 % of time. Leads the UE staff in relationship building and collaborative planning efforts with representatives from campus partners to ensure best-in-class guest experience for all events and to ensure that all events are in line with Brandeis branding standards. Significant campus partners include: President's Office; the Provost’s Office; Institutional Advancement; Student Activities; Media Technology Services; Facilities Services; Public Safety; and the campus food service provider. Exercises a high level of integrity in all interactions and transactions. Serves as a key member of the university’s new Space Committee with the charge of increasing the shared and flexible use of campus spaces for optimal utilization.
  • Communication. 25% of time. Emphasizes the importance of a service-oriented approach among staff in all facets of the UE operations, from event planning through implementation. For example, UE maintains systems for mitigating avoidable conflicts between event dates that can result in staffing and space challenges. Routinely makes presentations regarding major events and recommended process improvements to university leadership and committees. Develops planning processes that link the necessary logistical and organizational operations across campus service providers to facilitate successful events and cost-effective deployment of services. Develops and administers campus event training program, including maintaining the departmental web page to serve as a campus resource for event planning.
  • Business development. 20% of time. Identifies opportunities for ongoing business development and revenue generation through events, including, for example, strategies for event programming outside of the academic semesters. Develops and implements ideas that contribute to the diversification and strengthening of revenue streams from all types of events, but especially sponsored and external events. Develops processes for balancing the allocation of resources for events that accommodate student and academic programming with events that potentially generate revenue for the university.
Education/Experience
  • Bachelor's degree required, preferably in hospitality, business administration, management, marketing, or related area.
  • Minimum of 8+ years in event management, including 5+ years of supervisory experience.
Knowledge and Skills
  • Interpersonal skills and a collaborative nature are essential with proven ability to bring individuals and units together to develop priorities, achieve shared successes, and, when necessary, resolve problems.
  • Excellent managerial and supervisory skills in developing a culture that emphasizes both accountability and kindness.
  • Project management and presentation skills.
  • Ability to develop and foster positive working relationships with diverse constituencies both within and outside of the Campus Planning & Operations division
  • Technical skills: Strong Microsoft Office skills and familiarity with tools for data-driven business systems such as Workday, 25Live, CaterTrax, Marching Orders.
