About the job
Alcoa's Transformation team has the responsibility of managing Alcoa's curtailed and shutdown facilities globally. This position leads all aspects of these locations primarily in the Eastern US but may include additional internal locations based on the needs in Transformation’s global portfolio. Responsibilities include managing holding costs and high-risk project work primarily performed by a contractor labor force. These activities present a significant financial risk and future liability to Alcoa and require focused and consistent attention to reduce costs and their impact on Alcoa. The goal of the position will be to minimize these costs while implementing safe programs to maximize the return on the assets and minimize long term liabilities.
Exercising sound social performance judgement and adhering to all applicable corporate and industry policies to achieve the goals of this position is critical.
Major activities/Key challenges:
  • Develop strategy and budgets for each facility and manage all resources within these plans, schedules and budgets.
  • Efficiently lead remote workforces at these curtailed and shutdown facilities. This would include acquiring resources, assigning responsibilities, and coordinating the efforts of team members and 3rd party contractors or consultants to deliver results.
  • Manage curtailed and closed locations safely and efficiently to ensure lowest possible holding costs.
  • At curtailed locations, protect the assets for a potential restart, and support redevelopment opportunities.
  • Safely and efficiently manage and resolve trailing liabilities while also supporting redevelopment opportunities.
  • Forecast and provide updates to management on the status and financials of all associated projects.
  • Develop, monitor, control and report budgets and budget performances, cost expenditures, and funding requirements for each project.
  • Effectively communicate to team and stakeholders in a timely and effective manner.
  • Develop all contract scope and budgets; proactively manage changes in project scope, identify potential crises, and devise contingency plans.
  • Develop and document written programs to ensure consistent and continuously improved site closure activities.
  • Work with local, state and federal regulators to investigate, remediate and resolve environmental liabilities based on good science and permanence.
  • Identify and work with potential users, tenants, or buyers of our locations to monetize the locations while ensuring that long term liabilities are addressed appropriately.
  • Work with internal resources to identify near and long-term social impacts related to our activities; seeking to avoid, minimize, mitigate, and remediate negative impacts with the aspiration of leaving a positive legacy
  • Conduct work in a manner that fosters the support of our host communities through the full life cycle of our projects by being a good neighbor, protecting the environment and keeping people safe.
About you:

  • Bachelors Degree in Engineering field.
  • 10+ years of progressively responsible experience in industrial site remediation and redevelopment.
  • In-depth knowledge of state and federal regulations regarding the cleanup and closure of environmental liabilities and a consistent track record of achieving practical Cleanup Action Plans with agencies.
  • Highly developed organizational and management skills to effectively and efficiently direct and coordinate several locations and their staffs.
  • Highly developed human relations and oral and written communications skills are required to direct and motivate subordinate personnel to meet the goals and objectives of each location.
  • MBA Degree preferred but not required.
