Experimental Research Scientist Job at Space Dynamics Laboratory

Space Dynamics Laboratory Albuquerque, NM

Job ID 8381B

The ability to communicate precise time and frequency signals between distant locations serves as the basis for several applications, including navigation, geodesy, coherent sensing, and general relativity experiments. The Quantum Sensing and Timing (QST) group at the Space Dynamics Laboratory is developing cutting edge systems for time and frequency transfer that exceed currently available technologies in precision and robustness. Such systems include utilizing femtosecond optical frequency combs and ultra-precise clocks. In addition, we are aggressively pursuing avenues to reducing size, weight and power (SWaP) of such systems. Besides the possibility of non-GPS-based navigation and timing, the developed systems will potentially have several broad applications in basic and applied science. We invite you to join us in this endeavor.

Necessary qualifications:

  • a well-rounded researcher (PhD or equivalent) with an interest in the above-described field
  • the ability to adapt to new technical areas
  • the ability to work both independently as well as in a diverse team
  • a creative, curious, and detail-oriented personality that extends to the laboratory environment
  • US citizen and able to obtain and maintain a US government security clearance

Relevant prior experience: (one or more)

  • work at a scientific lab (such as a private research institute, the DOE national labs, DOD national labs, NIST, and/or international labs researching particle-physics, synchrotron, etc.)
  • laser and atom physics, classical and quantum optics, photonics and/or PIC development
  • low level electronics: analog, digital, circuit design, PCB design
  • high level electronics: microcontroller, FPGA, software-defined radio (SDR)
  • software development: low-level languages such as C and assembly and/or high-level languages such as Python
  • numerical and scientific computation, including utilization of HPSC facilities

Position rewards:

Being immersed in a group that is tackling some of the most advanced timing and sensing technologies with potentially broad applications. In addition, Space Dynamics Laboratory takes pride in and highly values its employees. SDL offers competitive salaries and generous benefits, including:

  • a 14.2% employer retirement contribution into a 401(a) account—no matching required!
  • generous paid leisure and sick leave
  • high-quality, low-cost health, dental, and life insurance
  • a great team that works together to solve some of the most fascinating problems on (and off) our planet
  • relocation assistance available for most positions
