Department Summary

The Division of Undergraduate Education and Student Success and University Housing co-sponsor five Faculty-in-Residence (FIR) positions at the University of Oregon housed in the Global Scholars Hall, Justice Bean Hall, Kalapuya Ilihi Hall, Unthank Hall, and Building B residence hall (yet to be named). FIR at the University of Oregon help shape the intellectual life of the residence halls and expand the academic enterprise beyond the walls of the classroom. The institution’s adoption of a live-on requirement in the fall of 2017 signaled a recognition of the academic benefits of a residential campus, and FIR complement a network of academic partnership for the first-year residential experience, including Academic Residential Communities (ARCs), Residential Communities (RCs), Faculty Fellows, and the Academic Success Hub.

FIR amplify students’ social and academic transition to a liberal arts and sciences research university through frequent, intensive, out-of-class interactions with faculty. FIR become integral members of the live-in Residence Life team comprising Community Directors, Community Coordinators, Program Coordinators, and Resident Assistants, and contribute to the actualization of the Residential Curriculum—the framework for facilitating resident and community development—in their residence hall.

Ultimately, FIR design co-curricular plans for programs, events, and activities, which may articulate their disciplinary expertise and personal interests, but generally appeal to all residents and offer broad-based academic support. University Housing provides FIRs with comprehensive administrative support to enable them to focus their work on mentoring, advising, and engaging undergraduates.

Position Summary

(Position 1) The Global Scholars Hall opened in the fall of 2012 and houses approximately 550 residents, along with apartments for the FIR and a Community Director—a Masters-level professional who supervises the 13 live-in Resident Assistants (RAs) and has primary responsibility for developing the community and providing safety and security for the students.

The Global Scholars Hall hosts two ARCs—Robert D. Clark Honors College ARC and Global Engagement ARC, sponsored by the School of Global Studies and Languages, College of Arts and Sciences. The Global Scholars Hall houses the Fresh Marketcafé with a range of dining options, a Housing Service Center, a game room, two music practice rooms, and demonstration and community kitchens. The academic spaces integrated into the first floor encompass six classrooms, spanning in size from a 20-student seminar room to the “Great Room” with an elevated stage accommodating up to 200, as well as a learning commons with study rooms, computer stations, and collaboration space.

The Center for Undergraduate Research and Engagement (CURE) and Office of Distinguished Scholarships (ODS) have their primary student-facing office in GSH 104, which hosts a consortium of allied offices’ weekly drop-in advising hours, including the Affiliated Students of Undergraduate Research and Engagement (ASURE), DucksRISE, McNair Scholars, GEO Study Abroad, STEM Core/SPUR, and Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP). The new Residence Hall incorporates a learning commons on the ground level of the hall, comprising academic spaces for Academic Residential Communities (ARCs), Residential Communities (RCs), Faculty Fellows, and the FIR. The ARC spaces include faculty offices, multi-purpose teaching spaces, and study areas. The Learning Commons hosts one community kitchen and two music practice rooms.
