Mountain Empire Community College is a comprehensive two-year college serving residents of Lee, Scott, Wise, and Dickenson counties, and the City of Norton. MECC is one of twenty-three colleges in the Virginia Community College System and operates under policies established by the State Board for Community Colleges and the Local Advisory Board. The College is financed primarily with state funds, supplemented by contributions from the local jurisdictions.

The purpose of the Education Support Specialist in Financial Aid Services is to:
  • Provide courteous, reliable, and knowledgeable assistance to persons inquiring about and applying for financial aid.
  • Provide operational support for financial aid office functions in the areas of application for aid, maintaining records, and data entry for determination of eligibility for aid.
  • Exhibit independent judgement in the interpretation and application of various policies and procedures pertaining to the programs of aid administered and the office practices required to adequately assist in the administration of aid.
  • Provide reliable and courteous services, information, and assistance for all visitors, callers, and aid recipients reflecting maturity and good judgement in ways which attract students and augment retention.

Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge, skills, and abilities required to be successful in the position:
  • Demonstrated excellence in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Access, and Excel).
  • Proficiency in the area of data input and retrieval with reports generation
  • Extensive customer service experience.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Detail oriented.
  • Ability to maintain the confidentiality of student record information.
  • Able to work effectively at a fast pace during enrollment periods and prioritize responsibilities
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external colleagues.


Minimum Required Qualifications:
  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • 12 months of experience in data entry and office practices/procedures,.
  • 12 months of customer service experience, preferably in a public setting.
  • An associate’s or bachelor’s degree in an applicable field such as Administrative Support Technology, Accounting or related field can be substituted for experience.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate degree in Administrative Support Technology or related field
  • Experience in a student information system, including PeopleSoft.
  • Experience working in a community college setting.
  • Knowledge of the FAFSA and the financial aid process
  • Prior experience with document imaging systems
