An amazing creative opportunity exists in a flourishing and world-renowned horticultural nursery known for its rare and unusual plant specimens and spectacular display gardens.

Annie’s Annuals and Perennials is looking to expand our garden and grounds crew for an individual who possesses a studied hand at the craft of fine gardening and a knowledge of the horticultural needs of a wide array of cottage garden, California native and Mediterranean climate appropriate plants. Twice yearly our garden beds are planted anew for seasonal garden displays. These onsite display gardens are a keystone of our success, as they inspire guests and staff, allow us to produce our beloved catalogue spreads, and support the needs of our Propagation Department. We are looking for a skilled gardener, as exuberant as the plants we grow who is eager to play a role in the gardens at every stage and season. The Fine Gardener will be a primary contributor to our Garden Design Committee and will maintain these bountiful dreamscapes throughout the year. The ideal candidate should possess creativity, organizational skills, an eye for detail, and a commitment to maintaining the highest level of quality when executing their daily tasks. This is a largely non-mechanized garden space guided by IPM principles. You will report directly to the Manager of Propagation and Production and will be joining a team of horticulturists with years of experience. Your responsibilities will cover the following supervised tasks:

Duties and Responsibilities:

· Contribute at every stage of the design process for the spring and summer display gardens

· Oversee and assist in bed preparation. This is to include, but not limited to the removal of annual and perennial plant material, amending soils, leveling beds and repairing retaining walls

· Oversee and assist in the installation of seasonal beds.

· Perform staking and support of fledgling and mature plantings

· Replace annual and plant materials in beds as needed

· Maintain all garden beds. This is to include but is not limited to weeding, composting, amending, dead-heading and pruning

· Monitor watering and soil quality of all beds.

· Swiftly and accurately identify and treat pest, disease and abiotic issues in the display beds

· Report, track and document all pest and disease issues and their treatments

· Map and log plant material used in display gardens

· Maintain debris around all planting and high visibility display areas.

· Operate, clean, and maintain hand and power tools, such as pruners, saws, manual tools, hoses, hand trucks and other associated equipment. Maintain storage areas.

· Learn and maintain a good understanding of the personal safety equipment required for each piece of equipment.

· Under supervision of Propagation Department, assist in harvest of seed and cutting material.

· Assist grounds crew to ensure replacement plants are potted up as needed in advance and back-up plant propagation areas are maintained.

· Assist grounds crew with winterization and bird-proofing of display beds when required

· Offer customer service to those seeking assistance. May include identifying plant material, locating nursery stock, or requesting horticultural advice

· Other various duties as assigned

Qualifications:

· Previous experience with groundskeeping or fine gardening and/or combination of training, education and experience is required

· Professional garden design experience is preferred

· Preference will be given to applicants who have completed recognized coursework or degrees in fields associated with horticulture, landscape design, botany or another allied field.

· Project management skills: will understand how to collect resources and manage others to achieve desired goals.

· The ability to work independently and set appropriate deadlines and standards

· Must be able to work well in a team setting.

· Must be able to clearly communicate, listen and take directions.

· Must have strong attention to detail, organization and time-management skills.

· Energy and enthusiasm: must find the work “fun” while being accountable for responsibilities

· Must be able to work outside in all weather conditions and be on-foot for long periods of time.

· Possess strong customer relation skills to answer inquiries about demonstration gardens, including plant identification, and assist retail staff with gardening knowledge as needed.

· Demonstrate ability to read, write and follow oral/written instructions provided in English.

· Knowledge or the ability to learn efficiently relevant safety regulations.

· Ability to lift and move moderately heavy objects, up to 50 lbs. safely.

· Frequent kneeling and bending of knees and back is required.

· Knowledge or the ability to learn efficiently, names, characteristics, of the plant varieties Annie’s propagates for rotation in the display gardens

· Ensure safe practices and proper PPE are utilized at all times.

Job Types: Full-time, Temporary

Pay: $20.00 - $25.00 per hour
