A successful candidate will play an active role in the City of College Park’s existing operational success. The purpose of the position is to conduct fire inspections and investigations to prevent and determine the cause of fires.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Independent judgment is required to identify, select and apply the most appropriate of available guidelines and procedures as well as interpret precedents. This position is responsible for fire inspections and investigations; work involves reviewing and approving building and development plans, conducting fire investigations, code enforcement, conducting interviews, and making arrests for violations. Inspect new and existing buildings and developments for code compliance; issues citations as required.Meets with property owners to discuss code violations and strategies to address violations.Reviews building plans for adherence to fire safety codes.Approves or disapproves plans; maintains records and reports.Reviews plans and development plans for adherence to fire safety codes.Assists the fire safety educator as necessary; makes presentations to civic and community groups.Performs fire cause investigations and testifies in court when necessary.Enforces all city fire codes and ordinances and regulations.Assists with major fires and all fire-related deaths; conducts investigations of suspicious fires.Photographs fire damage and evidence of fire causes; processes and stores evidence in compliance with departmental policies and procedures.Logs inspections; creates and files reports; maintains a run log.Attends meetings, seminars, and training sessions as required.Participates in public education activities.Performs other related duties as assigned.The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that logically relate to the position.Work Environment: Work may be performed in an office environment or the field. Most Firefighter work is performed in various indoor settings including living quarters and office areas. Varying work schedules are required. Hazardous tasks performed under emergency conditions may require strenuous exertion under such handicaps as limited visibility, exposure to hazardous or toxic chemicals or gases, extremes in temperature, cramped surroundings and contact with death, emotional stress, trauma, contagious disease, and terminal illnesses. Firefighters are also exposed to extreme heat, contaminated environments, emotionally upset people, noise, physical hazards from traffic, fire and falling objects, and atmospheric conditions such as smoke, fumes, odors, and gases. May be required to wear protective equipment such as a hard hat, face and ear protection, breathing apparatus, fire protective leather gloves, boots, fire retardant clothing, and to utilize body substances isolation – including latex gloves, eye protection, pocket valve resuscitation masks, and bag valve masks.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
Associate’s Degree or college coursework in Fire Science or related field; Bachelor’s degree preferred. A minimum of four (4) years of experience as Firefighter/EMT.Certified as State of Georgia Peace Officer, NPQ Firefighter III, Fire Inspector I, HazMat Operations, and Fire Safety Educator II.Equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.Must be 21 years of age or older.Possession of a valid (Class F or equivalent) Driver's License issued by the State of Georgia.Must have a satisfactory motor vehicle record (MVR) and the ability and willingness to drive a city vehicle; if assigned job duties require the use of a vehicle.Experience in communicating with diverse communities, and in establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships.Proficiency in MS Office Suite, as well as knowledge and understanding of the organizational structure, workflow, and operating procedures.Extensive hours and weekends will be required at times.Pre-Employment screening is required: criminal background check and drug testing.
