The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Sport Fish is recruiting for a Fish Culturist 1 located in Anchorage!

What you will be doing:

The Fish Culturist 1 located at the William Jack Hernandez Sport Fish Hatchery is responsible for the day-to-day catchable area rearing operations of catchable rainbow trout, Arctic char, Arctic grayling, and Chinook salmon at the William J. Hernandez Sport Fish, a cold-water recirculating aquaculture hatchery utilizing modern recirculating technologies, in support of the sport fish enhancement programs.

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Responsible for all catchable rearing functions in the absence of the Catchable Production Supervisor.

  • Daily routine fish culture duties including cleaning tanks, monitoring and management of fish health, water quality, Recirculation Aquaculture System (RAS) operation, removing and enumerating mortality, data entry, loading feed hoppers.

  • Daily monitoring and manipulation of water temperatures, flows, well usage, and updating rearing spreadsheets.

  • Inspection, preparation, and repair of the rearing units to ensure that all equipment is ready for each production cycle.

  • Assist with the planning of catchable production, loading strategies: grading of rainbow trout and catchable Chinook.

  • Performing fish size sampling and subsequent adjustments to feed rations using programmable automatic feeding equipment.

  • Assisting other fish culture staff with hatchery activities such as transporting fish, gamete collection, incubation setup, egg picking, ponding, and other rearing programs.

  • Purchasing and maintaining supplies and materials while strictly adhering to project budgets and following SOA procurement policies.

The person in this position will be integral in the planning, caring for, and enumeration of Chinook salmon, rainbow trout and Arctic char and Arctic grayling during their grow out stage. The individual will also participate in a variety of diverse fish production activities throughout the year, from egg takes to stocking fish.

The working conditions you can expect:
This position is primarily based out of the William Jack Hernandez Sport Fish Hatchery, located at 941. N. Reeve Blvd. in Anchorage, but does include limited field work to regional lakes and streams to release salmonids in stocked waters and occasional travel to remote egg take sites. The catchable production floor is indoors and temperature controlled at roughly 50 degrees F, which is where the staff member will be working for the majority of the year. During the spring and summer, the staff member will be working both indoors and outdoors to assist with egg takes and stocking fish.

Who we are looking for:
Our ideal candidate will possess all or most of the key desired strengths:

  • A minimum of two years of hatchery experience rearing salmonids in a long term hatchery rearing program involving egg takes, incubation and rearing

  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with proper salmon/trout rearing methods.

  • Good verbal and written communication skills

  • Ability to supervise others and work in a self-supervised capacity

  • Ability to work well as part of a team to achieve project objectives

Special Note:

  • The applicant must have or obtain within 6 months of hire a class B Commercial Driver's License with tanker and air brake endorsements. Random drug screening is a requirement of this position.

  • The applicant must be able to work at least one weekend day as part of the regular work schedule and occasional holidays.

  • Over-night travel may be required for some stocking activities.

  • Applicant must be able to lift and carry 50 lbs.

  • Applicant must be able to stand for long periods of time and work in cooler temperatures.

  • Requires passing a pre-employment drug test.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college with a major in fisheries science or a closely related field.

Substitution:
Four years of any combination of progressively responsible work experience in aquaculture or mariculture and/or post-secondary education from an accredited college (3 semester/4 quarter hours equal one month) in aquaculture, aquatic ecology, fish biology, fisheries, fisheries resources, fisheries sciences and management, fisheries technology, marine biology, natural resource management, oceanography, or veterinary science will substitute for the required bachelor's degree.
