Primary Purpose:


Supervises and coordinates activities of workers engaged in assembly, erection, and repair of boilers, tanks, vats, and pressure vessels.


Typical Duties:


Lays out reference points of columns or plates on foundation, following blueprints. Directs workers in selection of type and location of rigging and equipment to lift parts into position. Directs welders to assemble unit. Lays out location and position of drums and headers on frame to insure specified alignment of tubes. Verifies dimensions of accessories, such as chutes, fan stands, uptakes, stacks, and ladders needed to adapt boiler or tank to location. Directs workers in repair of boilers, tanks, vats, and pressure vessels. May construct templates of wood, paper, or sheet metal to facilitate layout tasks. Performs other duties as described under Supervisor. May be designated according to work activities or workers supervised as Supervisor, Boiler making Shop; Supervisor, Field Assembly-and-Erection; Supervisor Mechanic, Boiler making.


Requirements:


Physically, the worker must be capable of exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Physical activity requirements are in excess of those for Light Work.

Intellectually the worker must be able to apply and interpret principles of rational systems (bookkeeping, engines, electronics, building), to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists; must be competent in beginning algebra and geometry and should be skilled in the computation of discount, interest, profit and loss; commission, markup, and selling price; ratio, proportion; and percentage; surfaces, volumes, weights, and measures. The worker must be able to read safety rules, instructions in the use and maintenance of shop tools and equipment, and methods and procedures in mechanical drawing and layout work.

The amount of specific job training required to learn the techniques, information, and facility needed for average performance in this position is from 4 to 10 years.
