DEFINITION

Under the direction of the Foster Care Supervisor, the Foster Care Specialist is responsible for care and service to children in foster care and the support of foster families serving those children. The Foster Care Specialist assists with placement, support, crisis intervention, problem solving and planning in support of the treatment goals and consistent with the permanency objective.

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED

Ensure a safe, caring and nurturing environment within each foster home and maintain regular ongoing contact with the youth and foster families.

Evaluate referrals for placement with foster families. Assess strengths, needs of both the children referred and available foster families to ensure that children are placed in stable, safe and capable homes able to meet their needs.

Support, equip, and educate new and current foster parents on how to effectively care for the at-risk children and youth placed in their homes.

Complete regular reports and service plans for the children and youth in care.

Attend and participate in team meetings and staff meetings to ensure program growth and excellence

Participate as part of a team to meet the needs of children in care and families who serve as foster parents.

Assist and coordinate as necessary licensing activities for foster families and oversee the relicensing process of existing families.

Provide foster parents with direction, instruction and training needed to meet the general training needs and requirements to be effective parents.

Provide or coordinate individualized training or instruction to meet the specific needs of current children residing in the foster home.

Maintain and keep accurate and updated records and statistics as needed and required for the Foster Care Program and for licensing requirements.

Maintain files for all children in care and foster families serving children according to our contract and Child Placing Agency licensing standards.

Review foster placement referrals and communicate placement availability to referring agency or authority.

Schedule and coordinate placement of new youth.

Work as a team member by providing assistance and support to other programs and staff as needed or directed.

Additional duties and responsibilities as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

A bachelor's degree or 5 years experience in helping roles with children/families is required. Strong communication and organizational skills are essential. The position demands a candidate with high energy and the capacity to meet changing demands and deadlines. Flexible hours will include evenings and weekends that are convenient to families and the needs of the program. The individual will be responsible for being on-call Monday through Fridays and rotating weekends in order to provide consultation, support, or placement services. The Foster Care Specialist must be able to work well with a team and build relationships and rapport in and outside the agency.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $16.00 - $17.50 per hour
