Duties Description
The Garden & Landscape Technician will be responsible for assisting the region’s Horticultural Technician in implementing the “Native Plants in State Parks and Historic Sites” policy (NR-POL-013) by installing and maintaining native plant and ecological landscape projects throughout the region. A partial list of required tasks is as follows:
  • Physical gardening and landscaping tasks;
  • Conducting plant surveys and site analysis;
  • Supervising and training park staff;
  • Photographing and monitoring projects.
  • Provide public education outreach discussing the benefits of ecological landscaping. Outreach may take the form of designing pamphlets and interpretive signage, managing educational events, plant walks and other garden events, and organizing training sessions for park staff.

Much of the incumbent’s time will be spent outdoors in gardens and restoration sites performing physical work under varying weather conditions. Office space will be provided for indoor tasks.

  • Ability to perform physical labor associated with garden and landscaping for extended periods in variable weather conditions.
  • Possess an openness to learning and motivation to take on challenging tasks.
  • Ability to work well in groups or on your own.
  • Possess leadership and professionalism to lead work crews and conduct educational programs for patrons.
  • Possess effective communication skills and the ability to interact with Park staff and patrons.
  • Interest in gardening, landscaping, landscape design, Native plants, and plant identification.
  • Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and have reliable transportation to and from office location.

PREFFERED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Familiarity with the flora of the Finger Lakes including species composition and distribution of native plant communities, habitat requirements of native plants species, planting and seeding techniques and control methods for invasive species.
  • Experience or education in horticulture, gardening, arboriculture, landscape restoration and/or plant identification.
  • Understanding of plans and construction documents.
