General Description
Content specialized tutors will lead one-on-one or small group lessons that cater to the needs and goals of students.
- Spring and Fall positions will be remote in Jefferson County Schools
- Summer positions will be on U of M campus.
Essential Job Duties
- Reviewing classroom or curricula topics and assignments.
- Assisting students with homework, projects, test preparation, papers, research and other academic tasks
- Working with students to help them understand key concepts, especially those learned in the classroom
- Teaching skills to improve academic performance, including study strategies, note-taking skills and approaches to answering test questions
- Demonstrating academic best practices for specific subjects and assignments, including research and writing tactics
- Developing and distributing teaching materials to supplement classroom lessons, including study guides
- Providing students positive and constructive feedback
- Offering feedback on progress to students’ teachers and Area Facilitators where appropriate
- Building meaningful connections with students from diverse backgrounds
- Diagnosing student needs through active listening techniques and questioning strategies
- Recognizing different learning styles and student preference
- Staying up to date with the school curriculum
Education and Experience
High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
- Dependable transportation to travel to each Jefferson County School location
- Flexible.
- Effectively communicating progress and data with GEAR UP Associate Directors.
- Must have demonstrated success in English, Math and Science.
- Ability to be a good Ambassador for the University of Montevallo and GEAR UP Jefferson County.
- Ability to successfully pass a background check.
- Ability to dress semi-professional
