The Supreme Court of Appeals of West Virginia has an immediate professional opportunity for General Writ Clerk in Charleston, West Virginia. This position directly reports to the Chief Counsel of the Supreme Court of Appeals of West Virginia.

General Writ Clerk

Position Purpose: This position primarily assists the Supreme Court by providing legal research and writing related to appeals filed with the Court. Specifically, the position serves to provide legal advice and analysis to the Justices of the Supreme Court on a wide range of legal matters. This is complex professional legal work designed to facilitate the smooth and timely consideration of appeals before the Court and the fair and efficient administration of justice in West Virginia.

Essential Position Duties and Responsibilities: Serves the Office of Counsel as a general writ clerk for the Supreme Court of Appeals of West Virginia. Provides legal advice to the Justices of the Supreme Court on a wide range of case types, including original jurisdiction extraordinary writs and appeals from abuse and neglect, family, criminal, habeas, and other proceedings. This position reports directly to the Office of Counsel’s Chief Counsel.

Duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

· Prepare detailed legal analysis regarding appeals pending before the Supreme Court of Appeals.

· Meet with and present legal research and analysis to the Justices of the Supreme Court.

· Draft legal documents for the Supreme Court’s approval and release to the public.

· Manage an assigned docket of active cases with attention to timely presentation of pending appeals.

· Assist in the proofreading and revision of coworker’s legal documents.

· Address emergency filings as needed in assisting Chief Counsel.

· Other work as assigned.

Requisite Qualifications, Education, and Credentials:

· A Juris Doctorate from an ABA accredited law school.

· Member in good standing of The West Virginia State Bar.

Skills and Knowledge:

· Ability to manage and complete multiple tasks simultaneously with minimal supervision.

· Strong organizational and time-priority management skills.

· Effective communication and interpersonal skills; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Justices of the Supreme Court, court personnel, co-workers, and staff from other offices.

· Ability to present ideas clearly and effectively, to communicate well and persuasively orally and in writing.

· Proficient with word processing, technology, and various software applications.

· Advanced problem solving and priority management skills.

· Considerable knowledge of general law, state laws, established precedent, and sources of legal reference.

· Considerable knowledge of court procedures and applicable rules.

· Ability to apply legal principles and specialized knowledge to individual problems.

· Demonstrated leadership acumen with high ethics.

Working Conditions (Physical/Mental Demands, and Environmental Factors):

Travel generally not required. Must be able to work well without significant direction on specific tasks or resolution of various legal issues. The work environment is primarily isolated, requiring the employee to identify and address issues in their assigned workload. Occasionally, the position requires the incumbent to be able to converse with others, often on complex topics. There may be an occasional need to lift up to ten (10) pounds.

Continuing Education Requirements:

Only those required for the employee to maintain a license to practice law in the state of West Virginia.

Criminal Background Check: Successful candidates must submit to criminal background check.
