Job Location: This position is with the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, Missouri Geological Survey, and will be located at 111 Fairgrounds Road, Rolla, MO 65401

As a Geologist for the Missouri Department of Natural Resources’ Missouri Geological Survey you will perform geologic mapping, investigations, and data preservation activities that assist decision makers with information for: mineral resource availability; subsurface geology; groundwater availability; infrastructure development; regional planning; and public safety. As a geologist, you will support the core values of the Geological Survey Program which include Technical Competency, Service, Professionalism, Ingenuity, and Cooperation and the mission and values of the Division and Department.

What you’ll do:

  • Perform office, fieldwork, digital mapping, data collection, data analysis, and interpretation related to Earth MRI Grants and other funding sources.
  • Conduct geologic field mapping and create maps using ArcGIS software that describe and classify surface and subsurface rocks, structures, landforms, mineralization, surficial materials, stratigraphy, and paleontology.
  • Arrange for access to private property to view outcrops and geologic features to ensure adequate data collection.
  • Inventory and manage data for National Geological and Geophysical Data Preservation Program

All you need for success:

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in geology, or closely related field and have completed, at a minimum, 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours of credit in geology including coursework required by the Missouri Board of Geologist Registration.
  • Experience or coursework related to economic geology or igneous petrology.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds, work alone in remote areas, walk long distances in hilly and rugged terrain, climb steep slopes, carry geologic specimens out of the field, and use shovel, hand auger, and hammer.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with mineralogy and geologic mapping or stratigraphy.
  • Experience working with ArcGIS or similar geospatial software.
  • Experience managing data and database maintenance.
