PAY: *Estimated Starting Salary Range: $56,000 - $57,300 annually

SUMMARY OF GIS SENSING SPECIALIST III:
The GIS Specialist III shall provide classifications of remotely sensed imagery and spatial analysis outputs and related technical support to client research staff, cooperators, and partners.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF GIS SENSING SPECIALIST III:

  • Assume a leadership role in preparing for and facilitating meetings with partners.
  • Development of new spatial data from remotely sensed data (e.g., satellite imagery, elevation data, and aerial photography). Generate approximately 2–3 classifications per month.
  • Conduct spatial analyses (e.g., developing statistics based on spatial location of features, developing new datasets though compilation of existing data, exploring patterns in spatial data, etc.) of available geospatial datasets to support ecological monitoring. Develop/conduct approximately 4–6 spatial analyses per month.
  • Assist with GIS geodatabase, design, develop, and maintenance to support project-level and regional-level restoration monitoring and assessment efforts, as needed.
  • As needed, perform review of scientific literature relevant to remote sensing, GIS analyses, and ecology-specific to habitats being mapped or analyzed.
  • Maintain adequate documentation on all activities.
  • Document the status and timekeeping of all projects and products in project tracking database as per established procedure.
  • Document technical and procedural methodologies for creating and maintaining datasets and performing analyses.
  • Produce FGDC compliant metadata for all deliverables
  • Participate in meetings if/when needed.

Schedule and Deliverables:
Will need to access government servers to complete the deliverables.

Will report to CNSS Program Manager and may coordinate daily work with client representative (Task Order Manager).

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE OF GIS SENSING SPECIALIST III:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Geography, Environmental Science with an emphasis on geographic information systems or remote sensing.
  • At least 3–6 years of experience working in a research setting
  • A Master’s degree could substitute for required experience

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES OF GIS SENSING SPECIALIST III:
Possess basic knowledge of the following:

  • Remote sensing theory including: 1) spectral reflectance characteristics; 2) spectral indices; 3) land use land cover classification; 4) pixel-based classifications; 5) object-based classifications; and 6) accuracy assessment of classifications
  • Common geospatial analysis techniques including: 1) site optimization; 2) buffering; 3) spatial queries and spatial joins; and 4) zonal statistics
  • Light detection and ranging (lidar) data
  • Geospatial datums and coordinate systems
  • Data management
  • Map production
  • FGDC metadata standards and development
  • Figure and table preparation

In addition to the above the ideal candidate shall be proficient at oral and written English-language communication.
