Purpose of Job
The purpose of this classification is to support the strategic direction of Knox County Parks and Recreation by providing maintenance, management and supervision of park facilities and activities within the parks.
Duties include, but are not limited to general facility maintenance, landscaping, trimming, mowing, assisting program operations, opening and closing facilities and operating a variety of light equipment. Receives immediate supervision from assigned department supervisor and follow direction given. Seasonal positions are temporary and are non-benefit eligible. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age
Essential Functions
The Groundskeeper II is responsible for the following essential functions:
- Work schedule consists of flexible work hours for days, evenings and weekend hours.
- Assist in maintenance, management and supervision of various park facilities.
- Perform general facility maintenance, landscaping, trimming and mowing.
- Assisting program operations, opening and closing facilities, operating a variety of light equipment and receives immediate supervision from assigned division supervisor.
- Must be physically able to operate a variety of machines, tools, equipment to include tractors, push mowers, trimmers, brush and woodchipper, chain saw, shovel, rake, etc.
- Maintenance Crew Support
- Perform preventative maintenance, repair and replacement of park facilities, including fencing, buildings, shelters, trails, parking areas, fields, and grass areas.
- Opens and closes park facilities as assigned.
- Assess cost to repair and maintain park facilities and put together estimate.
- Perform concrete patching, forming and pouring.
Mowing Crew Support
- Perform trimming, mowing and general landscaping.
- Perform tree trimming and removal.
- Perform maintenance and repair on greenways and walkways.
- Pick up litter at various assigned park facilities.
Cleaning Crew Support
- Clean parks, including common areas and parking lots.
- Clean and sanitize bathrooms; ensure that they are stocked as directed.
- Pick up all trash, empty trash cand and replace trash bags.
- Responds to and reports immediately if called upon by local regional or central office supervisors, as part of a coordinated emergency response by the Knox County Mayor’s Office
- Performs other related duties as required.
Additional Job Functions
- Plants and maintains trees, flowers, and shrubs.
- Lays and repairs cross ties and landscape timbers used to beautify parks and grounds.
- Repairs, replaces, or installs park equipment, water lines, and drain lines.
- Transports furniture, equipment, and other materials to/from County departments.
- Respond to and report immediately if called upon by local, regional or central office supervisors, as part of a coordinated emergency response by the Knox County Mayor’s Office
- Ensure regular, punctual attendance during scheduled work hours
- Perform other duties as required
Minimum Training & Qualifications
- High School diploma or GED required: Associates degree preferred
- Minimum of three years’ related experience in building and grounds maintenance and the operation of heavy motor equipment
- A valid Tennessee Driver’s License is required
- Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered for employment into the position
- Applicants who are offered this job MUST take a drug test. Passing the drug test is required in order to start the job.

Physical Requirements
- Must be physically able to operate a variety of machines, tools, and equipment to include a County vehicle, tractors, bush hogs, lawn mowers, weed eaters, chain saws, blowers, concrete mixers, hand-tools, etc. Must be able to use body members to work, move or carry objects or materials.
- Must be able to wear personal protection equipment (PPE). Physical demand requirements are at levels of those for active work.

- Ability to work indoors and outdoors, cold and hot weather conditions including precipitation
- Exposure to sunlight for extended periods of time
- Exposure to various types of sprays, pesticides, and other chemicals
- Works around and with various types of equipment including welding and cutting torches
