The Missouri Institute of Mental Health (a research institute at the University of Missouri-St. Louis) has an immediate opening for two part-time Field Coordinators to work on a statewide suicide prevention initiative. The positions are located in the Southwest region of Missouri – to cover Barton, Cedar, Hickory, Jasper, Dade, Polk, Dallas, Newton, Lawrence, Greene, Webster, McDonald, Barry, Stone, Christian & Taney counties, and the St. Louis Metro region - to cover St. Louis city/county, St. Charles, Jefferson, Franklin, Warren, Lincoln, and Washington counties.
Responsibilities

Duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Effectively communicate with target populations (employers, faith-based organizations, first responders, service members, veterans, and their families (SMVF), firearm retailers, and firearm owners) to collaborate on firearm suicide prevention efforts.
  • Distribute educational materials to target populations about identifying individuals at risk for suicide and how they can prevent suicide by encouraging safe storage strategies.
  • Provide training and guidance to target populations about the link between easy access to lethal means and safety strategies that prevent suicide.
  • Conduct telephone contact, in-person visits, and follow-up calls to establish and maintain rapport with businesses and complete evaluative surveys.
  • Facilitate relationship-building community members and recruit participants for the Firearms and Suicide Prevention Coalition.
  • Must own an insured vehicle and have the ability to travel within a 250-mile radius in the Southwest region of Missouri.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Training, knowledge, comfort, and experience with firearms and the gun-owning community.
  • Ability to engage target populations (employers, faith-based organizations, first responders, SMVF, firearm retailers, and firearm owners) in suicide prevention efforts.
  • Training or experience in suicide prevention best practices and effective suicide prevention communication.

Pay commensurate with education and experience.

University Title: Research Specialist II

Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience and at least 1 year of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary
Preferred Qualifications

  • A combination of education or relevant experience (law enforcement/military/post-secondary education) and at least 1 year of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary.
  • Preference will be given to individuals with experience working with target populations (employers, faith-based organizations, first responders, SMVF, firearm retailers, and firearm owners) in Southwest Missouri. Experience with firearms, firearm safety, and/or suicide prevention strategies is desired.
