The US Army Corps Rivers Project, located just outside of St. Louis, is seeking a Forest Management and Monitoring Intern to serve for four months this summer. Duties will include:
a. Riverlands Migratory Bird Sanctuary is around 1200 acres in size and our most visited public space. The intern will be monitoring vegetation and using various methods of control (including herbicide) to treat invasive species.
b. Forest Inventory – Floodplain Forest monitoring is a large part of our Environmental Stewardship program. This data helps inform resource management decisions on USACE property. The intern will assist with
monitoring efforts of floodplain forest inventory plots.
c. Reforestation Site Monitoring – Establishment and maintenance of reforestation sites is ongoing. The intern will be monitoring these reforestation sites to determine tree survivorship that will dictate supplemental tree planting.
d. Herp Array Monitoring — Work with USACE Wildlife Biologists to collect data on amphibians and reptiles of the Mississippi River. The primary focus of the project is to determine populations of softshell turtles nesting on Ellis Island near West Alton, MO. Work will include identifying, measuring, and recording many different species.
Compensation amounts (pre-tax):
– $350 weekly Living Allowance
– $900 monthly Housing Allowance
– $20 weekly Commuting Allowance
– To/From site travel expense reimbursement (if non-local)*
- Internship positions with the US Army Corps of Engineers will receive a To/From Site travel reimbursement that reflects the actual roundtrip travel costs from their 'home' to the site. The reimbursement amount is based upon total distance (mileage) travelled and current federal per diem rates. Interns are required to submit an expense report to SCA with documented round-trip travel costs for reimbursement. The requested reimbursement amount is capped at $650.
This position is not eligible to receive an AmeriCorps Education Award.
It is SCA’s policy that all AmeriCorps-required background checks must return cleared results prior to the position’s start; this includes being fingerprinted for the FBI check. Otherwise, the AmeriCorps award will be removed or the position’s start date will be delayed due to non-compliance.
