Head Coach of Football

LOCATION: Wayland Baptist University (WBU) – Plainview Campus

DIVISION/DEPARTMENT: Intercollegiate Athletics

SUPERVISED BY: Athletics Director

POSITION CLASSIFICATION: Exempt (Executive)

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES: The Head Coach of Football position requires all functions normally associated with an intercollegiate football program and will be bound by the university and the athletic department mission statements.

SPECIFIC TASKS AND DUTIES:

  • Coaching and management of all practice sessions and program associated events.
  • Have a sound working knowledge and commitment to compliance of NAIA and Sooner Athletic Conference rules and regulations.
  • Commitment to NAIA Champions of Character five core values of integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship, and servant leadership. Exhibit a commitment to creating a team culture grounded in Christian ethos and these five core values.
  • Understand and support the mission, policies, and regulations of Wayland Baptist University.
  • Schedule competitions and related events.
  • Understand and excel in the coaching techniques and strategies for a successful collegiate football program.
  • Monitor team’s academic performance and support, enhance, and utilize internal and external systems for helping create academic success. Create a culture and belief on the part of student athletes that a high level of academic performance is an expectation of both the program and the department.
  • Monitor program financial status, manage expenditures, operate within budget parameters, process business office forms correctly and in a timely manner, and communicate effectively with all personnel involved with financial matters.
  • Coordinate and oversee an ethical process for recruiting and retaining student-athletes, meeting quantity and quality recruitment goals set by the University with the ability to compete at the highest level both academically and athletically.
  • Support the mission and structure of the department that will include the management of a nationally competitive roster.
  • Develop, oversee, and participate in year-round staff presence and productivity in support of program, department, and institutional goals.
  • Work closely and in a timely manner with Faculty Athletic Representative as well as Compliance and Eligibility personnel.
  • Demonstrate the ability to be a positive, fair, and respectful role model and team member while building cohesive teams.
  • Monitor, manage, and constructively mold (as is possible) student athlete conduct, character, and behavior in season and out of season both in conjunction with all Wayland functions and activities as well as their actions away from Wayland.
  • Support and work closely with Executive Director of Student Services in all matters of team member behavior and discipline being handled in the Executive Director’s office.
  • Complete and communicate/respond in a timely manner to all requests from Athletic and University administration regarding policy, procedures, and management of the Football program.
  • Learn about and embrace the amazing history of the Wayland Baptist University’s athletic programs.
  • Purchase and maintain equipment and supplies.
  • Participate in department event preparations and execution as needed.
  • Cultivate positive campus and community relations.
  • Effectively participate in the marketing and financial development of the program.
  • Hire, supervise and lead a quality coaching staff.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

Master’s Degree applicants will be given first priority.

EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE:

Applicants must currently be active in the field of football coaching with college level playing and coaching experience preferred.

  • A commitment to living and modeling a Christian lifestyle and coaching from a Christian perspective is essential.
  • Possess proven integrity, leadership skills, and the ability to motivate student-athletes to be successful academically and athletically.
  • Possess good interpersonal skills, demonstrated ability to communicate information in a clear, understandable, and effective manner, both verbally and in writing.
  • Possess organizational skills, time management, and relationship building.
  • Demonstrate the desire and ability to work with and recruit a diverse population.
  • Demonstrated customer service ability requiring a very high level of diplomacy and professionalism to effectively handle a broad range of sensitive interpersonal situations.
  • Demonstrated ability to proactively assess work operations and anticipate potential problems; ability to develop and implement strategies for preventing/resolving problems.
  • Great ability to effectively perform work of a highly sensitive and confidential nature that requires access to information. Must be able to exercise sound judgment and discretion, tact, and diplomacy.
  • Exhibit strategic and appropriate decision making, ability to exercise good judgment, and use of critical thinking skills;
  • Ability to work in an environment demanding flexibility, frequent interruptions, hectic pace, and interaction with students, staff, alumni, and the public;

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Employment is subject to an introductory period to monitor employee performance. If hired, the prospective employee must present documentation within three (3) days of hire date to establish their identity and employment eligibility as required by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Employee must be able and willing to travel and work on weekends and evenings. Must be able to operate a licensed motor vehicle, have access to a dependable motor vehicle, and possess a valid state driver’s license. Must have and maintain a satisfactory driver’s record.
