Job Responsibilities

1. In the performance of duties, operates CDL Class A licensed vehicles including maintenance trucks, pavement marking equipment, tractors, mowing machines, snowplows, salt spreaders, heavy road graders.

  • Moves and shapes earth, scarifies large holes and rough shoulders for fill and strengthening, also levels highway shoulders.

2. Operates sweepers, backhoes, loaders, vactors, gradalls, stripers and other heavy motorized equipment.

  • Makes minor repairs and performs routine preventative maintenance to equipment.

3. Performs labor relating to the maintenance of roadside and rights-of-way.

  • Cuts grass, weeds, and brush.
  • Repairs, replaces, and patches concrete, bituminous and other roadway surfaces.
  • Repairs and cleans drains, storm sewers, ditches and other drainage facilities.
  • Cleans and repairs bridges.
  • Removes and disposes of trash, dead animals and other debris along the highway weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Fills pavement cracks and joints.

4. Operates and performs daily maintenance on dump trucks.

  • Hauls stone, concrete, sand, asphalt and other construction materials.
  • As needed, moves equipment and supplies to other work locations, stockpiles materials and loads trucks.
  • Maintains material usage records.

5. During snow and ice conditions operates snowplow and spreads salt/sand as needed.

  • Plows and removes snow, responds to emergency weather situations, as instructed verbally or in writing, to inspect roadway and remove hazardous materials/obstacles

6. In the performance of duties, operates and maintains CDL Class A licensed vehicles or other heavy equipment such as, low boys, cranes, augers, large tractor trailers, bulldozers, power shovels, concrete spreaders, paving mixers and other related construction equipment.

7. Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of those enumerated above.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Minimum Qualifications

1. Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of an eight grade graduation.
2. Requires two (2) years of experience operating highway construction equipment.
3. Requires one (1) year driving experience immediately preceding appointment free from incidents which could result in license suspension or revocation.
4. Requires possession of a Class “A” CDL with appropriate endorsements, including air brakes.


Preferred Qualifications (In order of significance):

1. Prefers ability to understand and carry out oral/written instructions.
2. Prefers ability to maintain productive working relationships.

Conditions of Employment

1. Able to report to headquarters within 45 minutes in emergency situations.
2. Requires ability to perform arduous labor.
3. Requires ability to lift 50 pounds.
4. Requires ability to work from ladders and scaffolding.
5. Requires passing a background check.

Position Marketing Statement

The Illinois Department of Transportation seeks to hire a Heavy Construction Equipment Operator. Under direct supervision of the Operations Supervisor II, this position performs a variety of tasks related to the maintenance, repair and upkeep of roads, bridges and other related structures and features of the highway system.

Work Hours: 6:30 AM - 3:00 PM Monday-Friday (30 minute lunch)
