Position Overview:

SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory seeks an Associate Staff Scientist to join the Fundamental Physics Directorate. The focus of this position will be to lead X-ray Laser experiments in the area of Quantum Information Science (QIS) and develop novel X-ray detection diagnostics for harsh radiation environments that are produced in experiments that use petawatt lasers.

Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Develop the QIS X-ray laser physics program.
  • Support target and diagnostic program for the development of quantum materials and parametric down-conversion.
  • Develop new techniques and operation procedures and support the high-energy density physics program at SLAC.

Note: The Associate Scientist position is the entry level in the Staff Scientist career path. The Associate Scientist is a 3 to 5 year fixed term research staff position. The second level of this career path, Staff Scientist is a regular continuing position. The Associate position is scheduled to be assessed after the 3 to 5 year period with the possibility of appointment to the Staff Scientist level. Appointment to the Staff Scientist level requires a review and evaluation of documented scientific achievement.

Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in engineering, physics, applied physics, or related fields.
  • Ph.D. level expertise in plasma physics and X-ray laser science, with demonstrated knowledge in fielding experiments at free-electron laser user facilities, sample delivery and ultrafast detection.
  • Effective communication and writing skills to prepare and present technical and scientific documentation.
  • Demonstrated record of scientific productivity through high-impact journal publications.
  • Demonstrated ability to work and communicate effectively with a diverse population.
  • Demonstrated ability to carry out independent research and be able to collaborate in a team environment.

The expected pay range for this position is $115,000 to $171,000 per annum. SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory/Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
