Position Summary
Under the supervision of and accountable to the Help Restore Hope Center (HRHC) Program Supervisor, the Advocate performs functions relevant to advocating for services or providing direct services to victims of violence and their families. Advocates provide crisis intervention, safety planning, skill development, and service linkage to victims of violence and their families with the goal to promote self-sufficiency.
Essential Job Functions
Bachelors/Associates and one (1) year experience or Associates Degree with two (2) years’ experience or HS Diploma and five (5) years’ experience with domestic violence program, community based human services or related field required. A combination of education and experience may be substituted for education. Must have valid New York State driver’s license and access to reliable transportation. Criminal history clearance.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Is sensitive to cultural differences and able to incorporate that understanding into service provision. Strong organizational and interpersonal skills. Effective oral, written, and public speaking communication skills, able to communicate with employees and other contacts in a courteous and professional manner. Ability to hear and speak well enough to converse over the telephone. Ability to work independently and with flexibility in days and hours of work. Demonstrate initiative, sound judgment, industry, and an understanding of domestic violence and sexual assault issues. Regularly required to sit, stand, walk, bend, climb stairs, and lift objects of up to 10 pounds as required.
Advocates are required to complete an initial 30-hour Rape Crisis Certification training. Advocates are required to complete 10 hours of continuing education credits annually specific to service provisions for victims of domestic and/or sexual violence.

Essential Job Functions
- Assures continuity of client services and high standards of the program; provides services to victims and their families; serves as advocate and primary resources person for all victims assigned.
- Advocate on behalf of victims with the court system, law enforcement organizations, medical community, and the community at large.
- Shares on-call responsibilities; takes corrective action to provide crisis coverage, ensure HRHC hot-line coverage requirements, incident notification, and debriefing. Responds to and effectively handles emergencies, which may require flexibility of both time and areas of assignment.
- Provides instruction and/or supervision in the provision of groups for victims and their families.
- Maintains and updates required records and documents for services provided.
- Functions as a member of an interdisciplinary team. Assures the high standards and continuity of services to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.
- Participates in service planning, implementation of program goals and in carrying out the activities of the program.
- Participates actively as a member of the staff team and volunteer network.
- Provides education regarding issues of domestic violence and sexual assault to other service providers in Madison County.
- Provides services in a manner, which is culturally competent. Empowers clients by using clients’ cultural strengths and informal support networks in service delivery.
- Maintains effective professional relationships with other service providers and community organizations in the interest of clients’ and program goals.
- Follows agency policies and procedures pertaining to identification and reporting of incidents.
- Complies with and carries out all Agency policies and procedures.
- Completes all necessary written reports, statistics, case files, and summaries in a timely manner and in accordance with program and agency standards.
- Attends and participates in individual supervisory conferences, staff and volunteer meetings, training sessions and professional development opportunities as required.
- Provides transportation as required. Ensures safety and welfare of passengers during loading, unloading and transit. Makes use of personal vehicle for program transportation as required.
- Handles emergencies, which may require flexibility of time and area of assignment.
- Partners with clients in defining needs, setting goals, and determining eligibility for services.
- Provides educational and support intervention to clients, including crisis intervention, safety assessment and planning, and referral and linkage to other services as needed.
- Performs other duties, responsibilities, and related tasks as assigned.
