SUMMARY

On a daily basis, the Fleet Manager will work with specific fleet of drivers to plan out, dispatch, and form profitable loads. They will be responsible for all aspects of each driver’s day-to-day interaction with VL operations and our customers. The Fleet Manager will also work with department staff to identify shipments for assignment to interline carriers and service providers that request to haul. This position is constantly trying to schedule the most effective, profitable trips for the drivers and the company to meet and exceed defined KPIs for overall success.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage, retain, and grow their Van Line fleet through effective, profitable planning, relationship building, proactive communication, and steadiness.
  • Responsible for day-to-day dispatch responsibilities for designated fleet. This would include calls for APU, shuttle truck reservations, confirming arrival times, gathering weights/paperwork when needed, pre-clearing SIT with customer care, managing expectations between customer care and all other departments.
  • Assign trips or shipments to designed fleet within the continental 48 states with laser focus to minimum driver profitability table: $ 3.50 per mile and $ 700.00 a day to truck.
  • When additional volume is needed to supplement trips, build relationships and work with other move managers (TSPs) to capture profitable volume for dedicated fleet.
  • Monitor changing traffic patterns and situations to adjust schedules and routes for designated fleet. Participate in blackout strategy meetings to open additional traffic lanes for more opportunities for fleet and organization.
  • During peak season, plan any alternative lift dedicated trailers (ATS) that may be added to the fleet for additional lift. Work with intern(s) to confirm labor at both origin and destination.
  • Prioritize the servicing of orders based upon company objectives. Understanding importance of servicing our own booked shipments first (direct booked military, GSA, COD, National Account) to maximize revenue and profit margin for organization.
  • Review and monitor all daily reports for fulfillment of service commitments. Revise and create new reports as needed and appropriate.
  • Develop positive working relationships with service providers, agents, interline partners, drivers, and staff to enhance teamwork and communication, and possibly develop new revenue channels through this communication.
  • Assist in driver orientations, fleet disciplinary action, and overall management of the fleet.
  • Work hand-in-hand with fellow fleet manager(s) to service day-to-day responsibilities with overall fleet.
  • Work with local operations, customer care, and all departments to prevent service failures and maximize both internal and external customer experience.


SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Managing day-to-day long-distance fleet and serving as quarterback for Van Line Dispatch team.


QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum requirement in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint of Beginner Level (Intermediate Level or higher preferred). Minimum keyboard skill level of 40 wpm.
  • Knowledge of Commercial Motor Vehicles and Federal Motor Carriers Safety Administration requirements.
  • Ability to speak effectively before customers and other members of the staff.
  • Be able to work Monday – Friday, plus Saturday rotations and after hours during peak season.


EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

College degree preferred. 5-10 years dispatch/fleet management/HHG planning experience required.


LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.


MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.


REASONING ABILITY

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
