JOB TITLE: Experienced Deckhand or Mate – Vessel

SUMMARY:

The Mate is a supervisor position at Herman Sand & Gravel. Duties range from everyday tasks such as making beds, washing dishes, making coffee, waking other crew members, and marine-specific responsibilities such as checking the tow, building tow, checking barges for water; to supervising tow-building activities and performing assigned tasks as directed by the wheelhouse.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Directs and assists deckcrew with laying wires to ensure proper stability of the tow using ratchets, wenches, sledge hammers, toothpicks and cheater bars to tighten all wires on the tow.
  • Supervises and assists deckcrew in general maintenance of the boat such as painting, chipping, and cleaning.
  • Supervises the assembly of tow using cables, lines, ratchets, straps wenches as per Captain’s directives.
  • Assists with locking by breaking tow, securing barges, and transiting locks using lines barges in fleets, locks, cells, or to docks.
  • Assures deckcrew maintains by tightening tow, pumping barges, barge alignment, etc. to insure optimal navigation & safety.
  • Assists wheelhouse in safely clearing bridges, locks, and moorings through communication of distances and speed.
  • Coaches, counsels, and evaluates behavioral and performance issues of deckcrew.
  • Assists Captain with corrective actions of deckcrew performance issues.
  • Conducts watch and task briefings to establish procedure and emphasize safety.
  • Deploys and operates the skiff to aid crew & visitors in boarding and departure from the vessel.
  • Assists engineer in fueling of vessel and other activities in the engine room as requested.
  • Directs and assists with the greasing, lubrication, and general maintenance of all deck equipment (i.e. pumps, winches, ratchets, and oiling gears on equipment.
  • Conducts boarding protocols by explaining station bills, alarms, and gathering locations during drills and emergencies.
  • Supervises and assists with daily cleanup activities such as making beds, sweeping and mopping floors, scrubbing toilets and cleaning bathrooms, washing and changing linens, washing dishes, and other housekeeping activities.
  • Repairs leaks, pumps wing tanks, removes debris, and places hoses to remove water from barge compartments.
  • Directs and assists with the delivery, stocking, and storage of groceries and vessel supplies.
  • Assist engineer in fueling of vessel and other activities in the engine room as requested.
  • Directs and assists with cooking meals for the crew and cleaning of the galley.
  • Supervises, directs, and oversees the training of new hire deckcrew.
  • Prepares order for supplies for approval by the Captain.
  • Oversee and directs the stocking, delivery, & storage of groceries and vessel supplies.
  • Directs and assists in placing sounders to aid in vessel navigation.
  • Assists wheelhouse in making bridges and locks, and moorings.
  • Sweeps or shovels debris from the deck of the boat & barges.
  • Places sounders to aid in vessel navigation.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be able to work in all types of weather conditions and at any time of day.
  • Must be able to work from a height 18 to 30 feet.
  • Must be able to work within a confined space of 3ft x 12ft x 25ft.
  • Must be able to lift & carry up to 75 lbs. for up to 1000 ft.
  • Must be able to frequently ascend & descend ladders & stairs.
  • Must be able to enter and exit barge hatches and vessel crawl spaces.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • Demonstrated understanding of towbuilding and locking procedures.
  • One year of experience as a Leadman or Mate.
  • Demonstrated organizational and communication skills.
  • Possess basic Computer Skills (Outlook, MS Excel, Word, etc.).
  • Must be able to work independently and without direct supervision.

WORK SCHEDULE:

  • The standard work schedule for all deckhands is 28 days on the boat, 14 days off; however, this work schedule may vary depending on the vessel operating schedule.
  • Work schedule aboard the vessel is generally a square watch working six hours on and six hours off for a total of 12 hours within a 24-hour period.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • The employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts.
  • The employee is occasionally exposed to heights of 18 – 30 feet.
  • The employee is regularly exposed to vibration and low-level noise in the work environment.
  • The employee is regularly exposed to daylight and night time operations.
  • The employee is regularly working outside and exposed to adverse weather conditions.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Constantly standing or walking to complete various tasks associated with daily

towbuilding.

  • Frequently carry at shoulder and/or front carries of tools, equipment, and lines weighing up to 100 pounds from a ground/floor height to a height of 60 inches for distances of up to 1000 feet on barges.
  • Frequently pushes and pulls with forces of ³100 pounds to complete varioustowbuilding tasks.
  • Frequently bends to attain/maintain a forward flexed position of up to 60 degrees to complete various tasks associated with the daily/occasional work activities.
  • Frequently rotate trunk/torso left-right to complete various tasks associated with the daily/occasional work activities.
  • Frequently reach to a shoulder level height of between 48-60 inches to complete various tasks associated with cleaning, painting, chipping, grinding, and painting.
  • F*requently grips with a force of ≥ 90 pounds*, pinching and manipulation various and pieces of equipment utilized towbuilding, grinding, chipping, or painting.
  • Regularly ascends and descends ladders, steps and various surface levels to complete daily/periodic towbuilding, cleaning,

  • Possesses a thorough knowledge of towbuilding to include knowledge of appropriate leads, lines, and wires {i.e. fore & aft, scissor wires, up river & down river leads, jockey wires, breast wires, etc.).
  • Demonstrates a thorough knowledge of locking procedures such as talking the vessel into the lock, breaking tow, stopping tow by checking lines and other locking procedures.
  • Can judge distances and river conditions that affect vessel’s safety and operations.
  • Possesses a basic understanding of deck, galley, and vessel equipment such as winches, ratchets, crickets, pumps, capstans, stoves, dishwashers, and grills.
  • Understand and demonstrates safe operations of handheld equipment such as grinders, chippers, deckcrawlers, and other shipboard maintenance equipment and uses appropriate personal protective equipment as it relates to the task.
  • Understands and utilizes appropriate equipment (i.e. air quality tester) before descending into wing takes.
