Product Engineering Specialist


The following job description is used to provide a factual basis for evaluation of related jobs encompassed by this occupational title, although there may be variations in task sequence, work done, tools used, type of equipment, etc. The classification of work under this Occupational Title must be based on the fulfillment of the Primary Function of this job description. The performance of any one or more of the duties found in the job details, or the use of equipment listed, without the performance of the Primary Function shall not constitute sufficient reason for classifying work under this occupational title.


Primary function: Performs all work required for the development, production, test, and evaluation of the prototype equipment in the experimental shop and related field operations.

Job details:


Performs one or more of the following duties:

  • Receives general instructions from supervisor.
  • Work is not closely supervised.
  • Lays out experimental parts.
  • Assembles parts and operates units to check function, adjusting as required.
  • Builds complicated mechanical, hydraulic and/or electronic test setups.
  • Sets up, operates, analyzes and checks performance of units and makes out complete daily report on performance,
  • Diagnoses trouble, overhauls and adjusts component parts, performing major mechanical, electrical and hydraulic work.
  • Sets up and welds all experimental parts or assemblies.
  • Develops builds, calibrates, installs, maintains and operates electronic, electrical, hydraulic and mechanical instrumentation and test equipment in the test laboratory and instrumentation vehicles and conducts test to obtain engineering data for evaluation and design of experimental equipment.
  • Paints experimental parts to achieve necessary finished appearance.
  • Lays out and develops experimental parts, designs, and builds tools and fixtures working from complex formed views of the part. May use computer aided software to help in this task.
  • May instruct and direct lower grade workers and apprentices.
  • May train Field Test Operators on test audit fogs and details.
  • May review field test service logs for accuracy and requirements.
  • Lubricates and cleans equipment* cleans work area and performs other miscellaneous duties inherent to the job.
  • Participates as a member of the Engineering Order Team.
  • Assist in planning and scheduling activity to keep product development on time.
  • Helps to determines total parts to be ordered for machines and testing purposes. Plans order sequence based on part lead time to ensure program schedule is met.
  • Investigates and analyzes test results. Recommend design changes so revisions can be adopted for new or current products.
  • Works in and supports Team environment.
