To accomplish these high expectations, the successful candidate will serve as a trusted strategic partner with department heads/supervisors and employees to foster a culture of engagement. The business partner will provide comprehensive assistance to supervisors and employees through workforce planning, talent management, performance management, employee relations and engagement, and interpreting and implementing federal, state, and College regulations, policies, and procedures. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Serve as a confidential advisor and content expert to supervisors and department leadership, provide strategic support and HR services in workforce planning, staffing, employee relations, employee engagement, talent development, performance management, organizational design, and succession planning
  • Partner with supervisors on staffing efforts in business partner areas, identify opportunities to improve workforce diversity and inclusion, and support all administrative processes for onboarding
  • Advise and assist senior leaders and supervisors regarding performance and conduct issues through effective listening, investigation, and documentation; apply judgement and decision making to recommend solutions and facilitate corrective action when needed
  • Mentor and provide guidance, support, and coaching to people and supervisors to increase engagement, resolve issues creating barriers to departmental success, and help staff reach full potential
  • Understand department goals and challenges, translate into talent development initiatives including new hire orientation, skill development, DEI initiatives, and engagement and employee relations topics
  • Partner with the Learning and Talent Development function of HR to continuously improve the onboarding function, enhancing the engagement of new staff from the time of offer and reflecting the value Colby places in them
  • Serve as absence partner in Workday, ensure timely payouts and prompt correction of time and leave issues, in partnership with the Workday team, develop and implement strategic program changes to correct issues and improve user experience
  • Exercise confidentiality and discretion with faculty and staff managing medical related requests for the College including FMLA and other leave requests, interactive discussions for ADA related accommodation requests including independent medical reviews, vaccination exemption, and remote work requests
  • Work with payroll to seamlessly coordinate the transfer of HR related data; perform one time, relocation, transition payments, and compensation/personal information updates
  • Maintain awareness of evolving employment laws, regulations, and world class practices, recommend updates to policies and practices as needed
  • Collect and assess data through one-on-one interviews, surveys, focus groups, exit interviews, and other options to support and develop engagement programs
  • Evaluate performance appraisal process and help departments link individual performance initiatives to strategic goals
  • Collaborate with supervisors to identify performance concerns; assist with written warnings and plans for success as necessary
  • Identify and explore new application channels for sourcing hires, quantify success rates, make recommendations
  • Work in partnership with business area leadership to develop employee recognition strategies

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent in education and experience
  • Broad based HR generalist experience with thorough competency in workforce planning, staff development, and employee relations
  • Minimum of five years of progressively responsible professional HR experience
  • Demonstrated ability to develop trust with supervisors and senior leaders and establish role as essential business partner
  • Demonstrated ability to embrace change and lead change efforts
  • Knowledge of HR policies, procedures, and best practices
  • Must be able to maintain confidential information
  • Advanced Microsoft Office skills; experience with Workday or similar HCM systems preferred
  • High level of professionalism; strong organizational, communication, and writing skills
  • Ability to apply critical thinking skills, excellent decision-making, problem-solving, and analytical skills
  • Strong attention to detail; accuracy with data entry is essential
  • Ability to deal effectively with a wide range of people in a helpful, positive, and constructive way
  • Excellent time management skills; deadline driven with proven ability to manage changing priorities
  • Proven talent dealing with complex issues in a fast paced, multi-task environment
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team, establish priorities, and work collaboratively as a member of a diverse community

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
General open office and campus environment. Position involves sitting, although frequent movement is necessary. Computer usage involving repetitive hand/wrist motion is also necessary. Some weekend and evening hours required based on deadlines.

Open to considering a hybrid work arrangement.
