Position Summary

The Opportunity: Skagit Valley College (SVC) is seeking qualified equity-minded applicants for full-time, tenure track faculty positions in the Human Services program on the Mount Vernon campus. The successful candidate, who has obtained mastery and demonstrates leadership in the Human Services field, will demonstrate exceptional classroom skills, enthusiasm for the subject matter, and an inclusive and equity-driven approach to teaching and learning. SVC seeks teacher-scholars whose activities complement and inform their teaching.

SVC Human Services faculty teach an equivalent of 15-18 contact hours/week per quarter (approximately 3 classes) and participate in College service and student advising. This position is expected to begin in Fall Quarter, September 2023.

This position is primarily based at the Mount Vernon Campus; however, instructors may be called upon to teach at the Whidbey Island Campus located in Oak Harbor, or to teach students via online instruction.

Duties and Responsibilities

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide high-quality in classroom and/or online instruction in Human Services classes in the generalist and substance use disorder track and related content areas;
  • Incorporate an equity-minded approach to teaching and learning;
  • Create a positive learning environment for students, using culturally responsive and sustaining practices to support and enhance student success;
  • Provide leadership and work collaboratively with the various department to develop, expand, and maintain successful pre-college to college-level pathways, with a focus on developing curricula and instruction;
  • Assist in designing, developing, and revising curriculum that align with the general, program, and class outcomes and to enrich offerings, including developing hybrid courses, online courses, contextualized and project-based courses;
  • Work collaboratively with faculty, department chairs, or other content-area experts to develop contextualized and project-based curriculum relevant to Human Services;
  • Advise and mentor students including serving as the fast-track advisor for students seeking the Substance Use Disorder (SUD) Certificate;
  • Assist in developing, assessing, and analyzing program outcomes for the purpose of program improvement and enhanced student learning;
  • Participate in division, department and other college activities, including college governance;
  • Actively engage with industry and participate in strategic planning, in assessment of program outcomes, and in acting to address gaps or opportunities;
  • Participate in division/department and other college activities;
  • Assist in marketing the program and participate in student recruitment activities;
  • Actively participate in and develop effective working relationships with the program advisory committee;
  • Work with program advisory committee members and local employers to facilitate co-op placements and job opportunities for students enrolled in the program;
  • Fulfill full-time faculty responsibilities in accordance with the negotiated agreement and Skagit Valley College policies;
  • Assist students in locating Human Services practicum opportunities;
  • Manage a departmental budget and related administrative functions;
  • Recruit, mentor and assist part-time faculty teaching Human Services;
  • Collaborate, facilitate, and participate in advisory board meetings;
  • Pursue professional development to stay current in the field;
  • Active Membership with the Washington State Consortium of Addiction Educators to maintain the status of a SUD approved school under WAC 246 811 030;
  • Work with the National Association of Addiction Professionals (NAADAC) to meet and maintain required courses and accreditation;
  • Perform other related duties and special projects as assigned.

  • Support students in accessing appropriate instructional and non-instructional services to facilitate student retention, completion and academic success for all students;

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the historically and socially constructed nature of human differences with a particular focus on power and privilege to promote equitable work and learning environments;
  • Ability to maintain partnerships and interagency community connections;
  • Build and maintain a Human Services program that meets the needs of the college’s students and the community;
  • Recruit and inspire diverse student populations to embrace learning and facilitate completion for all students;
  • Work and interact effectively with colleagues, staff, students, administrators and other various cultural and socio-economic backgrounds in support of SVC’s commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion;

    • Contributes to ongoing program and course assessment activities and to the related development and revision of curriculum
    • Fosters relationship-based advising connections with students in support of students' academic and career aspirations
    • Participates in college governance, campus life, and/or community relations.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree, equivalent or higher, in Human Services, Social Work, Behavioral Health, Counseling or closely related field(s);
  • Recent work experience in a behavioral health, substance use disorder, counseling environment, or closely related human services profession;
  • Teaching experience in education or industry (to include workshops, seminars, etc.);
  • Ability to obtain the SUD Professional Certification within 3 years of hire;
  • Ability to maintain the NAADAC Education Approved Provider’s standards;
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the Washington State Department of Health SUD accreditation standards and process;
  • Demonstrated actions to promote equitable access and educational achievement of diverse students;
  • Strong technological skills

Desired Qualifications:
  • SUD Professional Certification;
  • Teaching experience in a community college setting or related;
  • Experience effectively teaching diverse student populations;
  • Experience implementing practices guided by critical pedagogy or other equity pedagogies;
  • Multilingual/Bilingual in English and Spanish, including ability to read, write, and speak in Spanish at an advanced/fluent speaker level;
  • Demonstrated commitment to collaborative teaching and learning.

Salary, Benefits, Conditions of Employment, Application Procedure

Salary and Benefits:


  • Initial annual salary placement ranges from $63,160-$84,213 for a standard 172-day contract. The College has a negotiated faculty wage scale in which placement on the salary structure is in accordance with the SVC Federation of Teachers Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • A standard 172-day contract is written annually for the period of September to June. Late contracts will be prorated on the basis of work days remaining in the contract year.
  • This position is exempt from the overtime pay requirements of The Fair Labor Standards Act.
  • This is a union represented position subject to a Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • Salary, retirement, medical and insurance benefits are provided in accordance with state regulations and may be subject to change in accordance with legislative mandates and collective bargaining agreements.
