Intern - Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL), Woods Hole, MA Job at ZEISS Group

ZEISS Group Woods Hole, MA

Carl Zeiss Microscopy, LLC supports 18 summer courses from late April through August in 2023 at the Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL) in Woods Hole, MA consisting of students and faculty attendees from 30+ countries around the world. The Training Group Summer Interns at MBL are an integral part of our summer support structure. The intern's primary role is to support student and faculty image acquisition activities throughout the summer. This includes basic set up of widefield microscopes, an understanding of Kohler illumination, brightfield, phase contrast, DIC and fluorescence contrasting methods, troubleshooting basic hardware and software issues, as well as an understanding of what constitutes a good scientific image and how to approach -and prepare for - image analysis. There will be an opportunity to operate and support more advanced systems as well, including laser scanning confocal microscopy, Airyscan and other superresolution techniques.
MBL Summer Interns must have good analytic and time management skills, be detail oriented and conscientious, and be able to work closely with people from a diverse range of cultural and scientific backgrounds. An outgoing disposition is an advantage, with a willingness to proactively engage with faculty and students (they won't always ask first when help is needed). Be willing to work long but fun hours, and enjoy a strong team environment with independent work.
  • Student currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s, Master’s or Ph.D. degree in biology, physics, optics, biochemistry or related field.
  • Skilled in microscopy, optics, and imaging with a focus or interest in biology.
