The Jewish Museum of Maryland is America’s leading museum of regional Jewish history, culture and community. The Museum tells the story of the American Jewish experience in the city of Baltimore and throughout Maryland. Our Museum offers visitors fascinating and diverse exhibitions, as well as, two landmark historic sites – the Lloyd Street Synagogue, built in 1845 and B’nai Israel Synagogue, built in 1876.

Exhibits Specialist

The Jewish Museum of Maryland (JMM) seeks an Exhibits Specialist to be a part of a team that deeply appreciates the role of museums in building community, exploring identity, and activating Jewish values. Reporting to the Deputy Director, the Exhibits Specialist provides project management for gallery-based and campus-wide projects, to include exhibits, developed in-house or borrowed, and innovative multi-discipline approaches to the use of gallery spaces rooted in participatory and socially engaged practices.

NOTE: All active full-time, part-time, and temporary staff are required to provide proof of full vaccination (COVID-19) as a condition of employment within The Associated system as of November 15, 2021.

Main Responsibilities
  • Coordinates and monitors project development for gallery-based projects including creating and maintaining project schedules, leading team meetings, articulating project goals and strategy briefs, and conducting after-action evaluation.
  • Collaborates with the Executive Director to create and implement a multi-year gallery plan/schedule.
  • Manage RFP processes for relevant contracts. Builds and manages projects teams, which can include designers, exhibit developers, multi-media professionals, contractors, consultants, and vendors.
  • Drafts Memorandums of Agreement and Contracts for any contracts to be reviewed and executed by the Executive Director.
  • Manages the installation and maintenance of JMM galleries across the campus.
  • Works with staff throughout the Museum to coordinate organization-wide schedules, ensuring projects are completed within budget and on schedule.
  • Manages project-specific budgets, track expenses, and provide budgetary reporting.
  • Provides support and collaborates with any Curator-in-Residence, Guest Curators, or exhibits-based interns.
  • Contributes to relevant grant applications and reports, as necessary.
  • Oversees the development and implementation of survey instruments and other evaluation modalities for exhibit-based projects.

Qualifications
The position requires a combination of strong professional credentials and demonstrated skills and success in multiple museum disciplines. The successful candidate should present most of the following:

  • A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in Museum Studies or related field.
  • 3+ years of experience in exhibit management
  • Experience with project management, including conceptualizing projects and evaluating funding opportunities.
  • Demonstrated success in working with a culturally diverse community.
  • Ability to continually develop skills related to use of rapidly changing technology and communications practices.
  • Ability to adapt and be flexible in a dynamic work environment
  • Ability to successfully interact and collaborate with key stakeholders to achieve results, including vendors, volunteers, and board members.
  • Experience working within a Jewish communal setting preferred.

  • The annual salary for this position is $50,000

  • We close the Museum for New Year’s Day, MLK Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, July 4, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and the day following Thanksgiving
  • We close the Museum for the last full week of the year

What to expect
  • Step one: All submissions will be reviewed, and the initial candidate pool will be formed. Not all submissions will make it into the candidate pool. Once the pool of candidates is established, a brief phone interview will be set up with a member of the Human Resources staff.
  • Step two: Remaining candidates will take part in no more than two interviews with members of the Jewish Museum of Maryland team via Zoom or in-person depending on the state of the pandemic, and the comfort level of everyone involved. The final candidate will be selected after this interview.
  • Step Three: Selection and placement of the final candidate. Placement for this position is anticipated to occur in October/November 2022. Once the final candidate has accepted their offer of employment, all other applicants will be notified of their status.
