Once you have completed the form found on the above link, you will have successfully passed the first phase of our hiring process. Before we proceed any further, we would like you to consider the points made in this letter. After we review your resume we will reach out to you.

You will need to be physically fit, healthy, and extremely energetic to succeed. Some days on the water are very easy and others are extremely challenging due to headwinds, adverse currents, or a heavy boat load. You must be able to lift heavy equipment, and lots of it, sometimes over rough terrain, on a daily basis. In order to place kayaks on overhead racks you must be able to press 75 pounds over your head in steady balance for 1 minute.

Overall, this is not an easy profession! It is very challenging to be responsible for the well being of a group of unskilled paddlers and to balance safety with learning and fun.

Guides need to be multi-talented and have a variety of skills that range the entire spectrum from kayak instructor to naturalist, navigator to kayak mechanic, camp chef to dishwasher, captain to cheerleader, big brother/sister to occasional stern leader. To succeed will require a great deal of initiative, study, practice, and a high degree of professional commitment.

We find that the biggest hurdle new guides face is underestimating the level of effort required to develop a comprehensive knowledge of local natural history. This usually entails a great deal of reading and studying before the kayaking season.

Basic housing is provided for free on the property, which includes a covered guide canopy with a communal kitchen, as well as basic amenities. You are expected to provide your own tent. Most guides use a sleeping bag and pad all summer. We have shared bathrooms, showers, and laundry. Electricity is also available for charging cellphones. This campground is located at our base of operations, so it makes commuting extremely easy. Communal living is a great way to connect with fellow guides in your time off work. If you desire more luxurious accommodations, you will to be self-sufficient in this regard. Some guides rent a home, cabin, room, or house for the summer; alone or with other guides.

There is no limit to the number of life skills and experiences this job can open up for you. The skills you can learn and the experiences you can have with people and wildlife while on the water can be life-altering. A good guide will use his/her excitement, enthusiasm & knowledge to bring guests to a new level of understanding and appreciation for their surroundings. If you learn to be a good guide and educator, you will on a daily basis be changing people’s perceptions about nature, creating environmental awareness for the greater good, and make lifelong friends in the process.

And all this while getting paid to kayak in one of the most beautiful places in the world, teeming with whales, seals, eagles, and other wildlife! Guests will repeatedly make comments to you over the summer, such as, “This must be like a paid vacation for you!” Well, not really, but close in spirit at least. By the end of the summer, if you dedicate yourself to improving your skills, you will be competent enough to join a kayaking expedition to any location in the world.

Off time can be spent in the friendly and unique town of Friday Harbor, population 2,500. Scuba diving and fishing here is world class. Excellent trails for hiking and bicycling are available, especially in the two distinct parts of our San Juan Island National Historical Park. There is even a decent rock climbing site on the island to keep you tuned up. Visiting the other islands in the archipelago is easy and free on the ferry system. Orca Island is home to the largest state park in Washington. National parks in the region include Mount Rainier, North Cascades, and Olympic National Parks, all famous for high- country trails, mountaineering, and climbing.

As we are a small company, we are extremely cognizant that our guides are the most important resource for our guests, and so we do everything we can to nurture them and make sure their experience is a rewarding one. We consider them all family. In order to make sure this family is a happy one, we take great pains to go through an extensive interview / application process. And later, we make sure that we train you extremely well for the task at hand so that you can excel at what we hope is your dream job!
