KLCC is seeking a full-time on-air host with excellent writing, reporting, and editing abilities. You’ll be the warm, credible and local voice guiding KLCC listeners through newsmagazine programming, such as NPR’s All Things Considered and Morning Edition. You’ll deliver newscasts and local interviews, going live to breaking news when needed. The ideal candidate will also be comfortable extending their reach beyond traditional radio, creating web and digital content for online delivery.

Salary/Compensation Statement:
  • Hourly wage reflects an approximate annual salary of $40,338 – $59,156.
  • New employees may not be placed on the salary schedule higher than any current employee in this classification with the same or greater number of years’ relevant experience.
  • Lane’s robust Benefits package includes a generous contribution toward medical, dental and vision insurance, basic term life insurance, long term disability, vacation leave, personal time and paid sick leave.
  • Lane Community College is considered a qualifying public employer for the purposes of the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program. Through the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program, full-time employees working at the College may qualify for forgiveness of the remaining balance on Direct Loans after 120 qualifying monthly payments under a qualifying repayment plan. Questions regarding your loan eligibility should be directed to your loan servicer or to the US Department of Education.

This is a 40 hour/week position. The Host & Reporter typically anchors live programming 15-20 hours/week during morning or afternoon drivetime, with other reporting, editing or production assignments as needed. Some weekend or evening hours may be required depending on news and programming needs. KLCC serves communities throughout western and central Oregon and some travel outside Eugene-Springfield may be occasionally necessary to represent KLCC at community events.

Required QUALIFICATIONS

Required Education:
High school graduation or equivalent supplemented by course work or training in communications, broadcast journalism, broadcasting, FCC rules and regulations pertaining to broadcasting and station operations and the use of audio-production equipment.
Relevant work experience may be substituted for the minimum education requirement.

Required Experience:
Two (2) years of combined experience in any of the following: as an anchor, reporter, and/or editor.

Licensure or Certification Requirements
A current FCC Restricted Radiotelephone Operator Permit.

Preferred QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred Education
Bachelors or Masters degree with coursework in journalism, digital content production, broadcasting, graphic design, audio and video editing.

Position Purpose:
The KLCC Host & Reporter anchors local segments of live news programming, primarily during NPR’s Morning Edition and All Things Considered. The host is responsible for preparing and delivering on-air segments, including interviews, newscasts and promotional content. Working with the Programming and News Director, the anchor coordinates content from local, regional and national sources during their shift, making edits and writing timely copy, as necessary. In addition to on-air responsibilities, KLCC hosts play a key role in ensuring that KLCC web, email and social media channels are curated to reflect KLCC’s editorial priorities. The host is a valued part of KLCC’s content team and may pitch and report stories as the schedule permits.

Essential Functions:
  • Present newscasts, conduct interviews and coordinate local content during newsmagazine broadcasts.
  • Research, report, write and produce journalistic content for broadcast and digital.
  • Establish audience rapport with warm, credible on-air delivery.
  • Monitor content for compliance with FCC rules.
  • Update and edit KLCC web, mobile, email and social media content, including text, audio, video and graphics.
  • Participate in public media fundraising drives.
  • Work with the management team to plan and execute coverage strategy.
  • Participate in local news coverage decision-making, including pitching stories and suggesting topics.
  • Develop and maintain news contacts.
  • Provide production support for features like event calendars, columns, blogs and podcasts.
  • Interact with the audience regarding digital and broadcast content.
  • Appear at occasional public events as a representative of KLCC.
  • Problem solve and manage sensitive information with appropriate awareness of FERPA standards; maintain confidentiality and sensitivity to the privacy needs of students.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Supervision Statement:
This position reports to the KLCC Program Director with editorial direction from the News Director.

Physical Demands/Working Environment:
This position works primarily indoors and is exposed to usual office working conditions, including office noises and interruptions, such as printers, telephones, and visitors. This position will conduct field reporting and public events. This position requires that an employee is able to sit or stand for extended periods of time; perform cognitive and psychometric work for more than six (6) hours a day. Work may require transporting materials up to twenty-five (25) pounds. KLCC covers communities throughout western and central Oregon and occasional travel outside Eugene-Springfield may be assigned.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
  • Ability to use broadcasting equipment, such as mixing consoles, media players and microphones.
  • Knowledge of audio/video software used for editing, production and playout
  • Journalistic standards of research, writing, reporting and editing for digital and broadcast.
  • Knowledge of photography, graphic design and audio/video editing.
  • Knowledge of content management systems and social media software.
  • Knowledge of live streaming and podcasting.
  • Skill with web and digital storytelling techniques.
  • Knowledge of the mission and values of public media.
  • Comfort with public appearances and fundraising.
