Lab Assistant for Killifish Husbandry and Research (Schedule: Monday-Friday) Job at Stanford University

The Department of Genetics at Stanford University is looking for a full-time fish technician to help with research on aging and age-related diseases (https://web.stanford.edu/group/brunet/). This position is represented by SEIU Local 2007 and the collective bargaining agreement between the university and SEIU Local 2007 governs the terms and conditions of employment.

The fish technician will care for the short-lived African killifish, which is a great model to study aging and age-related diseases. The fish technician will also perform laboratory procedures involving this fish. The ideal candidate will be well-organized, reliable, and motivated, and he/she/they will have excellent ability to interact with team members. Previous experience with fish husbandry is desired, but not required.

Duties include:

  • Maintain various strains of fish
  • Maintain the Aquatic Housing Systems, including checking water parameters, preparing food, regular feeding, sterilize fish tanks etc.
  • Recognize and report signs of illness or behavioral abnormalities.
  • Take fish census and record information, such as deaths.
  • Maintain accurate and compete records on fish inventory and breeding.
  • Treat animal under the direction of a post-doctoral fellow(s).
  • Set-up breeding tanks and collect fish embryos, and hatch developed embryos.
  • Perform lab procedures such as genotyping.
  • Perform lab procedures such as injecting DNA and RNA into fertilized eggs (fish transgenesis).
  • Organize the fish room.
  • Feeding the fish during the weekend approximately once a month (Saturday and Sunday).

Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated habits of cleanliness and neatness.
  • Ability to keep detailed records.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instruction in English.
  • Understanding the techniques required to care for animals.
  • Computer experience to maintain breeding records and other documents preferred.
  • Ability to work in a pathogen-free environment using established procedures.
  • -Other duties may also be assigned.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A least two years of animal work experience is desired. Experience working with fish is highly desired.
  • Computer experience (excel, word, email, etc.) in order to maintain breeding records and other documents preferred.


EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):

This position requires a minimum of one year of Laboratory Assistant I level or a combination of education and relevant experience.



KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):

  • In addition to the qualifications listed for the Laboratory Glassware Washer, these employees must have demonstrated initiative and good judgment.
  • Ability to perform work with a minimum of error under general supervision.
  • Ability to train others in aspects of Lab Assistant work.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

  • Manual dexterity to perform assigned tasks.
  • Write by hand, sort/file paperwork or parts.
  • Frequently stand/walk, perform seated work, operate special machines.
  • Occasionally twist/bend/stoop/squat, reach /work above shoulders, light fine grasping.
  • Lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 20 pounds.
  • Rarely help move heavier items (e.g. chairs or lab equipment; packages of supplies; drums containing 2 to 15 gallons, depending on ability.
  • In some Glassware Washing operations, occasionally may pull a wheeled Glassware cart that weighs approximately 100 pounds.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • Work occurs in a research laboratory environment.
  • Depending on research, Lab Assistants may work in the vicinity of animals, chemicals, gasses or hazardous materials.
  • Expected to follow all safety requirements and procedures, including wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) if required.

The expected pay range for this position is $28.26 (step 1) to $34.13 (step 10) per hour.*

The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
