SUMMARY:

This position is a member of the clinical team and helps to ensure that patients receive timely and appropriate care as dictated by Sunshine Community Health Center’s procedures and providers. This position provides direct clinical support to medical providers, clinic staff and patients of Sunshine Community Health Center; with a patient centered, team based approach. The Laboratory Coordinator’s primary function is to maintain the lab facility and schedule, in an orderly and professional manner. As
needed the Laboratory Coordinator may also be called upon to provide support in a capacity similar to the medical assistant support staff.

Current Covid vaccination and booster required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (include but are not limited to):

1. Maintain all requirements and duties for participation in State of Alaska Immunization Program, as well as maintaining immunizations privately purchased by SCHC
2. Inventory, order, and maintain the organization of all Lab supplies (Purchased, LabCorp, State)
3. Remove all expired lab items from the lab and facility monthly
4. Maintain Crash Cart inventory.
5. Receive, upload, and route Alaska State Public Health Laboratory result reports to ordering provider
6. Perform monthly QA of lab equipment
7. A monthly collaboration meeting between the Willow and Talkeetna Laboratory Managers and provide a quality report to Clinical Director/Floor Nurse
8. Train new employees to SCHC lab; schedule time in lab as appropriate
9. Train and review lab procedures/protocol with current staff; schedule time in lab as appropriate
10. Maintain the organization of lab and provide directional materials for staff
11. Maintain communication and work with outside lab services, SCHC Clinical Director(s), and Floor Nurse to improve lab workflow, including new equipment, supplies, systems and protocols
12. Annually review available point of care testing appropriate for use at SCHC and make recommendations for continuation, or removal with the Clinical Director(s)
13. Maintain, update, and annually review laboratory policies and procedures with the Floor Nurse and Clinical Director(s)

MEDICAL ASSISTANT ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (include but are not limited to):

1. Take vital signs and brief medical history
2. Assist when needed with clinical procedures
3. Taking X-rays, sending them to radiologist for reading, ensure results are given to ordering provider and documented in the EHR.
4. Assist in preparation for specialty clinics. Paperwork/funding/follow ups.
5. Assist with acute, emergency patient care when needed shared between all MA’s who
oversees flow and fills in as need arises
6. Assist when making specialty appointments and referrals, and faxing appropriate medical records when required.
7. Assist in faxing needed prescriptions or orders to required organizations
8. Perform lab functions for patients; these include but are not limited to: phlebotomy, injections, urinalysis, pregnancy screening, PT- INR testing
9. Perform point of care testing
10. Perform patient callbacks & result letters as needed
11. Assist in providing prompt, professional care of patients to the clinic
12. Maintain and fully understand the importance of patient confidentiality
13. Medical Assistant daily, weekly, and monthly task list

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
Graduation from high school or equivalent. Graduation from a medical assistant training program, (or equivalent schooling) or on-the-job training at the discretion of the Medical Director. EMT experience may substitute: (or LPN, CNA or other similar certifications.) Minimum one-year experience in a health care setting. This position requires the completion of the COLA Lab Manager certification course or similar, certification as a Breath Alcohol Technician/DOT urine collection, and completion of the CDC “You Call The Shots” immunization education program within six months of hire. This position requires the acquisition of a Certified Medical Assistant certification within two years of hire, time requirement may be adjusted at the discretion of Clinical Support Manager.

  • Ability to communicate well with patients and visitors as well as other staff members
  • Knowledge in the practice of primary health care
  • Knowledge of and willingness to use appropriate coding and billing techniques as required by SCHC
  • Phlebotomy and injection skills
  • Possess or be willing to get current CPR certification
  • Strong computer skills, and ability to trouble shoot and work independently with computers
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and equipment
  • Knowledge of community and area resources
  • Provide for absolute confidentiality in all Sunshine Community Health Center matters
