Laboratory Manager Job Posting

The Laboratory Manager operates and manages all aspects of the tissue culture laboratory, which provides both plants to the conventional clone nursery as well as acclimatized plantlets directly to clients.

This role requires in-hood technician abilities along with organizational and collaborative skills to work with Nursery Production to accomplish the goals of the organization.

The ideal candidate has a strong interest in plant tissue culture, operates the lab space efficiently, observing cleanliness and organization. Experience with sterile technique and plant dissections, autoclave use for sterilizing media and consumables, mixing reagents and formulating nutrient solutions. Facility upkeep is a plus, and training will be provided for all aspects of the position.

Position Summary:

This position will be responsible for executing plant tissue culture methodologies to achieve production goals. The position requires a hands-on approach. The laboratory manager will be responsible for managing all lab techs and supervisors, maintaining accurate inventories, executing production plans, and locally managing a clean stock program. The Laboratory Manager is expected to maintain all aspects of the tissue culture germplasm and production process including:

• Reagent and nutrient Solution formulation
• The use of autoclave equipment for sterilizing media and consumables
• Media Pouring
• Plant dissections and transfers
• Sampling for indexing and virus screening
• Crop troubleshooting for pathogens and growth anomalies
• Fulfillment of plant orders
• Equipment upkeep and maintenance

Principal Responsibilities:

• Conduct and evaluate plant tissue culture daily activities for mass scale tissue culture production
• Provide technical guidance and implement laboratory protocols
• Provide accurate inventories daily
• Orders chemicals and supplies
• Responsible for maintaining a safe work environment
• Maintain tissue culture equipment maintenance/cleaning schedules
• Responsible for hiring, setting goals, training and do performance evaluations of direct reports
• Responsible for establishing plant production schedule
• Maintain detailed and organized records of project data and other materials as needed, maintain inventory records, and regulatory compliance.

Educational Requirements:

• Bachelors degree required with coursework in Biology and Chemistry

Experience Required:

• 1-5 years in a laboratory setting
• Management experience
• Experience with sterile technique
• Experience with autoclave use

Software Experience:

• Must have working knowledge of Google Sheets or Excel
• Document drafting with Microsoft Word or equivalent
• Email organization and business acumen

Candidate Minimum Requirements

• Must be 21 years by the start of employment
• Degree in plant science or related area
• Excellent organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills
• Prior experience with sterile technique and new crop build-ups
• Familiar with plant inventory record keeping
• Tenacity and independent decision-making ability to make the proper decisions that will result in the achievement of company goals
• Ability to travel (<10%) may be involved
• Creativity, innovation, drive, and enthusiasm. Positive attitude
• Fluency in computer skills. Primarily google-docs suite

This is a full time exempt salaried position and compensation is commensurate with experience.
