Position Summary:
In addition to the regular duties of Practice nurse the Lead nurse will be responsible for the following duties: Managing patient flow through clinic and adjusting staff assignments as necessary to facilitate efficient quality services. Planning and management of clinical staff coverage. Supervising and guiding other nurses in their work. Encouraging a culture that promotes staff productivity. Orientation, training and skills assessment for all clinical staff. Assist practice manager with employee evaluations of clinical staff. Assist practice manager in preparing the nursing budget. Maintaining inventories of medical supplies and medicines. Serves as Infection control and safety officer for the practice. Monitors and enforces compliance with standards policies, procedures and regulations. Oversees maintenance of drugs and supplies to ensure proper inventory and charge capture. Identifies opportunities for patient care improvement through observation and documentation review. Assist providers with emergency situations including anticipating and providing required clinical support, transfer of patient as necessary and communicating with and supporting family members
Practice Nurse Duties: Performs a wide variety of nursing care functions for ill, injured, convalescent, disabled, and healthy patients based on established protocols and specific physician orders. Performs assessments of patients, documents findings, and provides preventive and acute nursing. Triages patient calls and confers with physicians to determine the urgency and diagnose patient problems. May initiate a plan for resolution when possible. Answer patient questions and provide counsel/education as necessary. Assists physicians with sick visits, well-child visits, specialty physicals, and in-office procedures. Administers medications and performs various tests and treatments. Manages inventory of medications and supplies. Collects specimens and performs in-office laboratory testing. Contacts patients or parents with test results and follow-up required. Provides sterilization for all reusable instruments. Cleans and restocks all exam rooms according to established protocol. Provides health education support for patients and family members. Completes all patient forms for physician signature. Disposes of full sharps containers and biohazardous waste using universal precautions and principles of infection control. Uses e-Prescribe to submit patient prescriptions. Completes arrangements for patient referrals.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
A minimum of 3 to 5 years is required, though most in this position generally possess in excess of 10 years experience. The Practice Nurse will be able to: demonstrate basic performance of nursing skills as well as knowledge of diseases, deformities, symptoms, treatment alternatives, and preventive health-care measures; follow established protocols for patient care; apply fundamental problem-solving and interpersonal communication skills; demonstrate awareness of essential patient care standards and regulatory requirements; demonstrate advanced computer skills and document with proficiency in an electronic medical record; perform effectively in a team oriented, patient focused, fast-paced environment; and meet NCBON educational requirements for continuing competence. Must possess the ability to handle moderately complex problems, and apply clinical judgment and discretion based on clinical experience and knowledge of standards of practice. In addition, the Practice Nurse will manage the patient care environment and expedite patient flow for assigned providers, and may be assigned a leadership role in clinical activities and quality improvement or safety projects. This position requires the ability to manage communication with all levels of individuals using the utmost diplomacy and compassion.
Required Education, Licenses, and Certifications:

  • Diploma or Certificate Program Practical Nursing
  • Current NC Practical Nurse license
  • BLS Required (BLS for Healthcare Providers, PALS, and NRP as appropriate for the patients in the assigned practice )

Other Information:
Speech and auditory acuity for communication of patient's needs. Visual and auditory acuity for observation of patients. Much standing, stooping, kneeling, walking, bending and lifting. Position may involve skin, eye, mucous membrane or parenteral contact with blood or other potentially infectious material. Ability to work under mental and physical stress is necessary.
