Hiring Range: $15.37 - $16.51 per hour

Work Schedule: Shifts vary, must be able to work a variety of shifts including early mornings, weekends, midday, and evening shifts.

NATURE OF WORK

As a member of the Parks, Recreation & Culture Division, individuals in this position are responsible for overall safety and conduct of the patrons using the pool and enforcement of the governing policies, rules and regulations in the pool area.

Lifeguards may work at either the indoor or outdoor pool. The outdoor pool is typically open from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

Individuals in the position are required to perform work in a manner consistent with and exemplary of the Town’s PRIDE philosophies and the Town’s Equal Opportunity Employment policy.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Individuals work under the direct supervision and/or leadership of the Recreation Coordinator - Aquatics to carry out assigned duties, functions, roles, and projects in both routine and complex circumstances.

SUPERVISION/LEADERSHIP EXERCISED

No supervisory responsibilities or control exercised.

Essential Job Functions

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

The individual in the Lifeguard role is assigned specific assignments, job duties, scope, authority, responsibility, roles and requirements as determined by the Town, department, division, and pursuant to laws, regulation and practices. Individuals in this position must be able to successfully perform, be responsible for, and/or assist in the fulfillment of many job functions and duties, with or without reasonable accommodation.

The following duties and responsibilities are illustrative of the primary functions of this position and are not intended to be all inclusive:

  • Monitors activities and directs scanning of the swimming pool and adjacent areas to prevent injuries, accidents, or drownings; maintains order.
  • Rescues swimmers in distress and/or danger of drowning within 30 seconds of recognizing distress and administers CPR and first aid.
  • Assures the maximum safety of pool patrons.
  • Performs regular safety inspections of pools and equipment to reduce hazards and to provide maximum safety to the patrons.
  • Attempts to modify dangerous guest behaviors and enforce all pool rules and regulations by strongly and quickly addressing behaviors to guests of all ages and/or guardians of underage guests.
  • Administers emergency care (Basic Life Support/CPR) and first aid treatment as necessary.
  • Effectively handles complaints and disciplinary problems involving patrons of the pool.
  • Must consistently attend scheduled in-service trainings to maintain a working knowledge of current lifeguarding techniques and procedures related to rescue of drowning swimmers including rescue skills, Basic Life Support (CPR Skills), and basic First Aid.
  • Effectively demonstrates the lifeguard deck rotational system for monitoring the pools and all other pool deck operations.
  • When not performing lifeguard skills, will perform maintenance and cleaning duties to keep aquatic facilities healthy and enjoyable.
  • Operate and maintain the pool equipment; conduct daily walk-through of facility to ensure appropriate appearance and clean of debris; document needed repairs and maintenance.
  • Assist the Pool Manager in maintaining smooth operations of all pools during the summer season.
  • Assists in facilitating emergency action procedures for the aquatic and facility areas
  • Demonstrates safe work habits with awareness of co-worker and public safety.
  • Handles various reports and records such as chemical logs, incident reports, etc.
  • Assists other aquatic staff members as needed
  • Maintain the cleanliness of the facility locker rooms on a daily basis.
  • Ensures safety regulations and procedures are adhered to.
  • Performs related work as required and assigned.

OTHER DUTIES

Depending on organizational need, additional duties may include the following:

  • Participates and assists in the implementation of Town-wide Special Events, i.e. weekend rentals, Water Carnival and Doggie Dip.
  • Performs research as directed, such as discovering new technology or tools, market research, etc.
  • Performs related duties as established by law/ordinance or reasonably directed by the Town.
  • Assists other Town departments/divisions, as necessary.

Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND FORMAL TRAINING

  • Must be at least 15 years of age.
  • Previous lifeguarding experience preferred, but not required.

LICENSES OR CERTIFICATES

  • Must have current Lifeguard, First Aid, and CPR certifications.
  • Swim Lesson Instructor or Water Safety Instructor certification preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of life guarding methods and techniques to enforce aquatic safety and accident prevention
  • Knowledge of the Town of Windsor Aquatics Handbook
  • Knowledge of the policies, procedures and goals of the Town and the recreation division.
  • Knowledge of blood borne pathogens and how to properly dispose of them.
  • Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with the public.
  • Ability to read, interpret and apply operating policies and procedures.
  • Ability to react quickly and accurately in emergency situations.
  • Ability to maintain composure during mentally, physically and emotionally stressful situations.
  • Ability to communicate professionally, clearly and effectively with people inside and outside the organization using verbal and written methods.
  • Ability to perform the necessary functions of the position and to make appropriate decisions consistent with the job expectations and position description.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to analyze mechanical pool.
  • Ability to handle reasonably necessary stress.
  • Skills in preparing written incident reports
  • Skilled in operation of equipment necessary to perform the functions of the job.
  • Knowledge of occupational safety rules and practices.
  • Ability to perform routine mechanical and chemical pool maintenance.
  • Ability to identify and correct facility safety hazards.
  • Ability to work under minimal supervision.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, subordinates, and patrons; deal tactfully with the public.
  • Ability to use good judgment and make sound decisions in stressful or emergency situations.
  • Ability to accurately complete a variety of forms, logs and reports.
  • Sufficient strength to make rescues and lift 50 lbs.; able to carry a rescue tube for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to perform rescue and lifeguard skills based upon American Red Cross Lifeguard Training criteria on a daily basis.

MATERIALS and EQUIPMENT USED

Materials and equipment used include, but may not be limited to the following:

  • Equipment: Position requires use of a variety of equipment: computers, tablets or other digital equipment, digital cameras, copiers, printers, scanners, fax machines, telephones. Rescue tubes, first aid equipment, personal protective equipment, and Automatic External Defibrillators.
  • Materials: Position requires use of a variety of potentially hazardous chemicals for cleaning purposes and to maintain proper water chemistry.

The physical requirements of this position are considered Medium Work, exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading; visual inspection involving small defects, small parts, and/or operation of machines (including inspection); using measurement devices; and/or assembly or fabrication of parts at distances close to the eyes.

The employee is subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions; may be subject to extreme heat: temperatures to above 100 degrees for periods of more than one hour. subject to noise. The employee may be subject to hazards: Includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, exposure to high heat or exposure to chemicals.

The employee may be subject to atmospheric conditions: one or more of the follow conditions that affect the respiratory system of the skin: fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gasses, or poor ventilation.

This position is not considered safety sensitive because the individual does not operate a commercial motor vehicle, as a regular function of his/her daily job duties.
