Job Description Summary
The Makerspace Technician will support the operation and administration of the San Juan College makerspace.

Duties & Responsibilities
MAJOR DUTIES

  • Enforce policies and procedures regarding safety, training and access to the space.

  • Teach Basic Safety Operations to users based on safety policies and procedures.

  • Demonstrate correct use of equipment and tools such as 3D printers, laser cutters, CNC, technical bench, woodworking, metalworking, and hand tools.

  • Provide hands-on guidance to users/members with project designs.

  • Provide tours to showcase makerspace equipment and projects.

  • May instruct on classes related to equipment usage, design software, and special projects.

  • Maintain inventory and order materials and supplies as needed.

  • Perform preventative maintenance according to manufacturer’s recommendations on a variety of equipment.

  • Maintain tools, equipment, and assets in working condition and communicate issues when vendor services are required.

  • Process membership applications and oversee membership database.

  • Provide project estimates and invoices and report on membership, revenue and other metrics.

  • Contribute to the makerspace social media pages and website.

  • Communicate essential information to staff, members/users and vendors (verbal and written).

  • Participate in staff meetings to manage ongoing program.

. Other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION

  • Knowledge of CAD, SolidWorks, or similar design software.

  • Knowledge of graphic design software such as Adobe Illustrator or CorelDraw.

  • Knowledge of advance manufacturing skills such as prototyping and electronics.

  • Safety training/certification.

  • Ability to communicate instructions.

  • Ability to work positively and professionally with community and colleagues.

. May work evening and/or weekend hours.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

The Enterprise Center Director assigns work in terms of department goals and objectives, specific tasks that must be accomplished, and schedule. The supervisor reviews work through conferences, reports, and observation of department activities.

GUIDELINES

Guidelines include FabLab Foundation best practices and college and program policies and procedures. These guidelines require interpretation in application. This position may be asked to provide suggestions to develop center guidelines.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK

. This work consists of various duties to support the operation of the makerspace.

. Providing a safe work environment while working with a variety of users of various skill levels contributes to the complexity of this position.

. The purpose of this position is to develop a positive experience for users of the makerspace and to support entrepreneurial ideas. Success in this position means advancing projects, prototypes and bringing project ideas to fruition.

. Contacts are typically with co-workers, other college personnel, business owners, students, and members of the general public.

. Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, to resolve problems, and to provide services and training.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT
. The work is typically performed while standing, walking, bending, stretching, or while sitting at a desk or table. The employee may lift light and heavy objects.

. The work is typically performed in the makerspace. The employee may be subject to loud noises, hazardous equipment, and similar environmental hazards. The employee may use personal protective equipment in performance of duties.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY

This position may assist in the supervision of student workers.

Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

. High school graduate or GED required. Preferred Associates Degree in related field.

. Two years education and/or experience using various equipment in makerspace.

. Experience teaching/training shop or similar situation.

. Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of New Mexico for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
