The Manager of Surgical Services, under administrative direction assesses, plans, implements and evaluates delivery of patient care utilizing principles to specific neonatal, pediatric, adolescence, adults, and geriatric patients. Provides administrative direction to development and evaluation of all nursing personnel in the Operating Room, Post Anesthesia Recovery and Day Surgery. This position also collaborates with other disciplines to achieve quality patient care and further contributes to nursing and the hospital through support of the philosophy, objectives, educational efforts and research efforts.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

I. Management of Nursing Personnel
1. Recruits, interviews and selects staff for the patient care unit.
2. Provide leadership and direction in accordance with organizational and departmental

goals and objectives.
a. Plans and develops objectives.
b. Plans ways to solve problems and make improvements in the delivery of patient

care and collaboration with the V.P. of Nursing.
c. Promotes the achievement of nursing service objectives.
d. Is accountable for the delivery of quality nursing care.
3. Provides for professional growth and development of staff.
a. Identifies needs.
b. Sponsors training programs: formal and informal.
c. Encourages education efforts of staff members.
d. Evaluation of programs.
4. Conducts regular performance evaluations for the entire staff; conduct evaluations for

new staff prior to completion of probationary period.
a. Ensures that staff are complying with a Roseland Community Hospital Nursing

Standards, American Nurses Association (ANA) standards, and EMS.
b. Participates in Unit Based Quality Improvement.
c. Keeps anecdotal records, i.e.: attendance records, positive and negative

attributes.
5. Councils employees and as necessary take appropriate disciplinary actions for

infractions of policies.
6. Plans and maintain staffing patterns for the patient care unit; meeting continuity

of care and acuity level needs.

II. Management of Patient Care Unit
1. Responsible for the safety and comfort of patients.
2. Collaborates with administrative support to maintain a clean, safe and secure

environment for patients, visitors and staff.
3. Develops, justifies and maintains a fiscal plan for the patient care unit, monitors

budgeted revenues and expenses, including salaries in capital expense items.
4. Promotes open communication within the unit, department and with other units and

departments outside of nursing.
5. Assist in programs of orientation for new staff to unit.
a. Establishes preceptor guidelines for the unit.
b. Reviews practices of emergency procedures, fire drills, disaster plan and

evacuation procedures.
c. Documents staff participation in these events.

III. Management of patient care
1. Provides input into standards establish for patient care.
2. Utilizes Unit Based Quality Improvement program.
3. Organize this patient care and ensure continuity of care based on knowledge of clinical

nursing needs.
4. Serves as a clinical resource person and assist nursing personnel in assessing

patient/family status.

IV. Miscellaneous responsibilities
1. Served on committees in nursing, hospital wide and/or professional nursing

organizations.
2. Fosters good public relations for boythe unit, Department Nursing in the hospital.
a. Attend social/hospital functions as requested.
b. Volunteers for at least three hospital activities per year.
c. Assists in planning and in promotion of hospital sponsored events.
3. Other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED AGE SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES

Patient population: All ages, including neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric.

The Associate must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patient served. The Associate must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span as well as possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s status and interpret the appropriate information needed as described in the department’s policies and procedures. The Associates performance evaluation contains age specific accountability/competencies applicable to the job classification.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES REQUIRED

1. Graduate of an accredited school of nursing with current licensure from the state of Illinois as

a professional nurse.

2. Baccalaureate required.

3. Demonstrated abilities in management skills in theory, practice and clinical expertise.

4. Three (3) years of nursing management experience.

5. Advanced Cardiac life support certification required.

6. Participates in educational conferences and updates and maintains professional knowledge and

skills related to the management of area responsibilities.

7. Certified in Operating Room Nursing required.

8. Member of professional organization(s).
